19 month old won't stop coughing

My 19 month old daughter has a had a cough for weeks if not months. I thought for a long time that she was just getting cold after cold, since it sometimes seemed better and other times worse. I have now taken her to the doctor's as she spent the last week waking up each morning coughing to the point of being sick. The doctor listened to her chest and said there was 'scattered crakling' suggesting a chest infection but nothing like pneumonia. She prescribed antibiotics, which I have now been giving her since Thursday. She is STILL coughing. She does not cough at night but mainly in the mornings and while playing during the day. She seems otherwise happy and does not have a fever, but is perhaps a little bit tired and does not have a huge appetite. Has anyone had a toddler like this coughing forever. Can coughs continue even after a chest infection has cleared with antibiotics? Any advice or similar experiences would be welcome at this point. Many thanks.

My 2 year old's cough has only just cleared up after a 3 month ordeal. I have no idea what cleared it up in the end, but I suspect it may have been the manuka honey I started putting in his milk. (I got some from a health food shop - not the stuff at sainsbury's)

that, and the humidifier after reading about it on MN. In fact, if you run a search on 'toddler cough' there are tons of threads - I trowled through a lot one evening

There have been some cases of whooping cough where I am, (Spain), recently where the child coughed for weeks but didn't have the 'whoop' associated with whooping cough. One friend's DD was only diagnosed when she changed doctor...

I would insist on a second or third opinion if she's not better in the next couple of days.
Having said that antibiotics is the treatment for whooping cough, mostly to prevent secondary infections, although only time cures it.

Ah, forgot to mention - my friend thought it was hayfever-related at first.

or could she be allergic to something in the house?

Hi, My Ds had a cough for an entire winter when he was about 10 months, he was given inhalers in the end which did control it. My Gp said he was too young to be dxd with asthma but as I had had it mildly as a teenager it was possible, maybe worth mentioning, I remember the inhaler was the only thing that stopped that constant coughing which really gets you down.
