Pericoronitis & Antibiotics - Advice

So have been to the dentist this morning for a routine appointment and turns out I have pericoronitis. I didn't realise, thought it was just my impacted wisdom tooth poking through a little as the area felt a bit tender, nothing more. I have been eating fine, very little discomfort (if any) and haven't needed painkillers/ibuprofen. I'm off on holiday on Sunday so the dentist gave me metronidazole and has given me 48 hours to try to clear it up myself. Apparently there is a very small area of pus around the sore part. She washed the whole area out with Corsodyl and gave it a good clean and then had a bit of a poke at it - kept telling me it could hurt but it didn't. She asked if her washing it out hurt but again it didn't - just felt like something being squirted on to my gum and under the gum!

Any tips to clear it without the metronidazole initially?

She also mentioned some evil side effects of metronidazole and said I would have to take 3 per day for 5 days. Any tips on how to manage the side effects if I end up having to take the antibiotics?

I'm obviously going to throw the kitchen sink at trying to clear this so I don't have to take the pills - not sure I really want those side effects on holiday!

Worth saying I have no facial swelling, no temperature and feel perfectly fine in myself! I'm floored tbh. I am sitting typing this now with no pain. I always thought if you had pus or an infection related to a dental issue it hurt like nobody's business.

If there is pus there then it's infected. Strange that you have no pain though. You could take the antibiotics with you on holiday just in case, along with some corsdyl mouthwash and use hot salt mouth rinses 3 times a day. If it flares up or starts swelling when away then take the antibiotics. Did they tell you no alcohol if you take them? That's really important as it will make you violently sick.

This was my plan - take them with me and see how I go. Yes they did say no alcohol, which is fine, I barely drink much anyway so all good

No pain, the area just feels a bit tender and swollen, which I thought was just a bit of a flare up. I can chew fine without pain and just leaving it be there I don’t feel anything.
