Can someone explain tranexamic acid to me?

I think I’ll ask the GP for this. But it just seems illogical and wondered if anyone can explain it.

So I’d take it says 1-4 max. Then what? A massive gush comes that’s been held back by like a dam?! Or suddenly I’d get a load of big clots?!

Where does it go?!

For heavy periods it take it?

For me it gave me great big clots and still had very heavy painful periods but with giant clots. I found it worse.

Sorry no help

My 16 yr old DD has been taking it every month for a year or so. I don't know how/why it works, but for DD the result is a less heavy flow, and her period ends after about 7 days rather than being super heavy for 10 to 14 days. She finds that she has to take every tablet (I think it's 3 times a day) because if she skips one or doesn't take it straight away when her period starts then it's less effective.

I used to have to take it for heavy periods many years ago. I have no idea how it works but it made a huge difference for me-lightened my flow significantly which meant I could get on with my life.

It basically clots blood. It's fantastic when someone's haemorrhaging because it's also cheap but we've only started using it for that relatively recently. It's never been useful to me for heavy periods unless I want to reduce my flow temporarily for an event, like a wedding. But then I'll be really "clotty" and that's painful and annoying for a different reason.

I find it works pretty well for me. It makes my stupidly heavy periods more manageable.
it slows the flow down and seems to make it less ‘gushy’ in the short term. It doesn’t shorten the length of my period sadly, and I do get big clots in the days after I stop taking it. But by day 4, I can do without it and just have a ‘normal’ level period I guess, that doesn’t get in the way of living.
it makes me feel a bit strange when I take it, and like pp says, I have to take it every 6 hours on the dot. It takes about 2 hours to slow the bleeding down and I still have to get up multiple times in the night.
It’s not perfect by a long shot, but i wouldn’t want be without it.

It works well for me. I take it for the first 1-3 days of my period. You do need to remember to take 2 tablets 3 times a day and catch it right at the start of your period or it’s not as effective (for me anyway). It seems to make the flow lighter and clot the blood.

@makemineadecaf you can get it from a pharmacy without a prescription

makemineadecaf · 03/05/2025 16:13

Interesting. So basically it’ll lighten the flow whilst taking it and then when you stop you get big clots instead?! Not sure I see the benefit!
