Why are my eyes doing this?

For the past few days my eyes have been irritated and weepy. At first I thought I might be coming down with conjunctivitis, which was odd, because that usually starts in one eye before spreading. But it never developed further. My eyes are irritated and weeping, but not crusty. Sometimes a little pink, but not inflamed.

AFAIK I don't have hayfever. And I'm already taking antihistamines in any case.

So what's going on with my eyes, and how can I stop it?

Have you changed anything lately such as cosmetics, shampoo, air fresheners etc? Try to rule out anything in the environment you might be reacting to.

Thatroomismine · 24/04/2025 09:23

Dry eye? Could you try some hypermellose eye drops.

Aparecium · 24/04/2025 09:28

I have allergic contact dermatitis to certain fragrance chemicals, so everything I put on or near my skin is fragrance free, including virtually all our household cleaning products. I haven't had a dermatitis reaction in a long time.

I do have dry eyes, but when they bother me it's a lack of tears that is the problem, not an excess.

I've dry eyes too, recently went for one of those fancy eye scans which showed nothing wrong, but my optician did say my eyes were 'very dry', duh no kidding! When I asked what causes it he said 'age, being female, screen usage'.

I use Hylo dual intense eye drops and also microwavable eye patches every few days (optician recommended), along with taking Omega 3 and I find all of that has helped.

I'll give eye drops a try. Feels counterintuitive to add water to watering eyes, but can't do any harm.

Hopefully they work, saying that I saw on the weather that tree pollen is high and there is some sort of pollen cloud or something, so might be that?

Lotus3 · 24/04/2025 18:33

Try the drops. Worst case, go to your local eye unit and get checked out.

northwestgirl · 24/04/2025 18:44

an optician explained to me that dry eye can cause eye watering- tears have 2 components, 1 which is basically watery and the other is oily, and its function is to prevent or slow the tears evaporating - if this second type isn't produced, the eye will over produce the watery tears

arapunzel · 24/04/2025 18:56

It could still be conjunctivitis- there are different types so it can present slightly differently to what it expected.

For now try cleaning the area around the affected eye with cool boiled water on a cotton wool pad. Change pillowcases/towels daily until it resolves. If your a contact lens wearer stop and try to have a checkup ASAP.

Have an eye test to be sure - the optometrist can advise and refer on if needed.

Nannyfannybanny · 24/04/2025 19:02

Northwestgirl is correct. Dry eye syndrome, doesn't mean your eyes are actually dry it means the saline is washing away the lubricating oils.

kazvdcfc · 25/04/2025 10:57

I use Hycosan Dual for dry eyes, wouldn’t use anything else.

They are watering because they are dry. Sounds odd I know. You might have an eye infection either That can make your eyes watery and red

Everything's drying up and shrivelling. Eyes, skin, hair, vag. Bloody menopause.

It’s true! 😭 (my “dry”eyes)

Happymomoftwo · 25/04/2025 13:50

I’ve had this before and it was conjunctivitis. I was given an antibiotic gel by the Boots pharmacist.

I have also had a watery itchy eye recently and this time it’s apparently linked to my migraines! Menopause is just the gift that keeps on giving!

KentishJute · 25/04/2025 13:55

Could it be blepharitis? I have this and it causes my eyes to feel gritty and sore. Treatment is heated eye mask and eyelid wipes.

PalmedOlive · 25/04/2025 13:55

I’ve had something like this recently. Felt like I’ve got something in my eye (only one eye) and it was watering and increasingly painful. No pinkness. Eventually went to eye A&E after several visits to optician and trying various drops. Seems I have something called Thygeson’s Keratitis and am using steroid drops which clear it up really quickly. Only problem is it seems to come back when I stop. Think this condition is quite rare but wanted to say if it continues get it properly checked out. I was really in two minds about going to the eye hospital but I’m very glad I did.

And my ears. I've always had waxy ears, but it was wet earwax that got rid of itself and never bothered me. Now it's dry and there's too much of it and it bothers me - just like my eyes.

How can I restore the oiliness in my eyes?

It's worth doing a covid test.
If you think it's allergies, investing in a couple of HEPA filters will help - one of your main living area and one for your bedroom. Highest clean air delivery rate (CADR) you can afford

Nannyfannybanny · 28/04/2025 13:03

I was prescribed blephasol cleaning solution, twice a day, and then hypramelose drops. Sorry I can't find it,so the spelling might be incorrect.
