Periodontal gum deep cleaning experiences

Hi

Has anyone had success of improving gum health after having deep clean under the gum line? What was your recovery like after the treatment?

I was diagnosed with Periodontitis about a year ago. My gums were dreadful when pregnant with my two year old which triggered me being seen. Been regularly seeing a hygienist and whilst she says my hygiene is very good (minimal plaque on visits) my gums are still inflamed with slight bleeding during clean. Will add they don't bleed on brushing at home just when probed during cleans. She referred me to Periodontist who has said my case is severe due to deep pockets at back of teeth and being so young (late 30s) I've also got 30% bone loss though that's not got worse over past five years.

She has scheduled me for under gum line cleaning split over six visits. She was very informative but has scared me a fair bit with view that this may not even work and also what my gums will look like post. Warned they'll likely shrink up and make more of my tooth visible.

Just interested in others experiences from the recovery to the success of it and whether it made their teeth look pretty different.....I've read you can get gum grafts if too much tooth root is exposed though sounds pricey. Also how quickly were you able to work after treatment? I planned on taking morning off for treatment then working from home in afternoon does that sound reasonable? I do an office job.

Thanks!

I’ve had this. It isn’t painful because your mouth is numbed, your mouth is sore when the pain relief wears off but nothing that some paracetamol can’t handle. I was able to work in the afternoon. I didn’t find it really unpleasant - not painful - but invasive and uncomfortable. But it should really help and is a necessary evil. Good luck!

Agree with @Reachoutreachout
I’ve had it done, 1/4 of my teeth per visit and it was fine. Hope it goes well OP, it’s worth it.

Coincidence as my dentist has been telling me I need this done and if it doesn't work - surgery! I've been avoiding it so far as I have some suspicion she's trying to make money as my previous dentist was never concerned. Made me feel like a bit of a minger tbh! I'm one of those people who just makes a lot of plaque but I clean my teeth well and always have. I already visit the hygienist every 6 months which I've been told isn't enough, although after following their advice I don't think my teeth are bad at all with minimal build up which I work hard to keep at bay. I use an electric toothbrush, teepee brushes, floss and a single tufted brush for the backs but it's never good enough!. Weirdly, my gums never bleed which I thought was a classic sign of gum disease? I'm due back tomorrow, probably for another telling off but may consider it based on the info on this thread.

Thank you everybody that's made me feel better!

Jobs4kids I'm in same boat where I make a lot of plaque. I will say before two years ago I wasn't aware of that and used to brush twice a day but not floss. The periodontist said it's likely the bacteria beneath the gum line has been building up since my teens and there's obviously nothing I can do to get at that. I've been told once you have gum disease you have it for life the bleeding is a sign it's active, perhaps inflammation as well. My issue is inflamed gums and bleeding upon probing even though my teeth and gum area are very clean. I do the same as you for cleaning it really is quite disheartening when you put the graft in and keep being told it's not fixing the problem - so I'm hoping this does help.

So I just had my dental appointment and she never even mentioned the need to have this treatment this time! In fact, she said my teeth & cleaning routine were fine and to keep it up! Instead she tried to talk me into having a root canal redone at ££££ which is causing no issues whatsoever! Hmmmm.

Spoke too soon! As per my other thread, dental surgery have called and said I need to come back as the dentist "needs to check something". Receptionist couldn't tell me what but I'm guessing (hoping!) it's to do with my gum disease as she never even mentioned it at the appointment the other day, just said my teeth looked clean with just a little bit of build up the hygienist could easily remove at next appointment. Don't know what to think but pretty pissed off (as well as worried) that I need to go back so soon :-(

I’ve had deep cleaning for second Time last was in May I seem to make lots of plaque after being on steriods many years dry mouth caused by meds and mouth breathing dosent help either I’m going to dentist every 3 months to try and keep on top of it and obviously using electric toothbrush and floss she said no mouthwash. Which I was surprised about.

Hi Op, I developed this after pregnancies where my teeth just seemed to go crazy. I never had a problem before.
i had one localised area which had a pocket in it - it required one visit but it didn’t hurt, I think she numbed it from memory and when it wore off I could tell it was worked on but that was it.

in between the diagnosis and seeing a specialist I embarked on a really strict dental routine which included the following:

  1. in depth flossing of all teeth
  2. water flosser also to flush out any rubbish
  3. using a teepee brush in the affected areas to double check flossing
  4. brushing with corsodyl toothpaste
  5. following up with a corsydl mouthwash
  6. 3 monthly hygienist appointments

i was recommended corsydl ointment too which you can apply to inflamed areas.

it’s costly to fix but it’s preferable than the alternative of teeth falling out 🙈
