Allergic to thrush cream?

I was given the Clotrimazole cream to manage itchy thrush (this was given along with antibiotics to manage a skin infection in another location, but that’s another story). It does help with the itching but I have noticed the hair follicles all become red and a red rash appearing since I started using the cream. It reduces if I stop but then the itching returns 😑

I’m guessing Im allergic to the cream? Does anyone have any experience? Have just called the GP but was told to call back 8am tomorrow as there is no slot left .

Don't know if it's similar but I can only use the tablets. I've never tried the cream but both Canesten pessary and cream give me a burning rash.

I have to get one specific version of the cream. Most of them use a preservative that will cause a horrible rash that spreads across my body. Not what you want with the intimate area as the epicenter.

basically, you are most likely reacting to an inactive ingredient. If you can figure out which one, you can look for a version made without it or have one compounded.

my pharmacy often has to order particular versions for me of topicals.

You can buy an oral tablet OTC. It might be worth trying that, especially as it’s so difficult to get a GP appointment.

@YourOnMute how did you rash look? Mine isn't really a rash, but rather each individual hair follicle looks very red as if inflamed! Certainly caused by the cream as they look better after I stopped it.

The GP directed me to a pharmacist who (after a phone call) prescribed an antibiotic cream to treat the redness. I’m really not sure it is necessary especially because I have just finished a course of oral antibiotics for another infection. Unfortunately can’t have GP appointment until next Wednesday. Guess I’ll monitor it for now😑

I got canesten cream in my mouth by accident once (don't ask!). I had quite a bad reaction. Tongue swelling up etc.
But I have used the thrush tablets you take orally since then with no ill effect.

I find the actual Canesten cream aggravates my skin so I buy the Boots own brand thrush cream and that's OK. Every thrush cream is different. Try a different brand

My skin would be inflamed, but the worse symptom would be the soreness. Worse than the thrush itself.

Okigen · 25/04/2025 10:31

@YourOnMute how long did it take for yours to calm down? Mine has been sore for 4 days now after stopping the cream 😑
