Any Doctors around - low lymphocytes - talk me down please

Just had a call from my 19 year old son at uni, he's had a cough for a while which we think might have been connected to mould in his halls. The uni condemned his corridor just before the easter break and he has now moved to a non - damp room. The mould was terrible, black and everywhere.

We suggested he contact the doctor for a check up. He had a telephone appointment followed where they suggested he has a blood test and this morning he's had a message saying that his lymphocyte reading is marginally low and asked him to repeat the test in 2-4 weeks.

Now he's suffered with serious anxiety disorders in the past and now is assuming he's dying of cancer. I've tried to reassure him that it is likely a result of an infection and he should just make sure he eats well and gets plenty of rest and that it'll likely be normal after the next test.

Can anyone give me any words of reassurance to pass on to him. I assume that the Drs aren't too concerned as they haven't even asked to see him face to face.

Thanks in advance.

So many simple things it could be - viral infection causing his cough, medication he's taking, low B12, and the classic stress.

If his levels were catastrophic he'd be seen urgently. Does he know the numbers of the test results?

Low lymphocytes here following a chest infection before Christmas. Had them checked every month until March as they were still low, but improving. Dr not concerned in the slightest apart from being wary I could have been more at risk of catching further infections. It’s really common following infection, that’s why they recheck to see if they’ve gone back to normal range.

Ah thanks that's what I'm telling him.

I've just asked him and she said it was very slightly low but no actual figures.
