dd2 (9months) throwing up - advice please

Ok, I know that most of you aren't doctors, but could do with a some support Dh has gone out. dd2 started yelling half an hour ago - I went up and she had thrown up all over her face and cot It was all in her eyes and ears as well, poor little thing.

She lies on her back - hardly ever rolls over so she was covered in it.

Obviously I have cleaned her up. Have moved her into the travel cot in our room as we sleep on the top floor and I wanted her nearer.

Am not used to babies being sick. She seems otherwise fine (no temp, rash, nothing else different) so I assume it is just a tummy bug/something she ate or similar. Has been sick 3 times - the last twice just a small amount after a lot of retching/coughing.

If this isn't a stupid question how should I hold her when she is actually vomiting? Obviously I want to make her as comfortable as possible, but if she gets covered I then have to disturb her a lot to clean her up and change all her bedding etc.

I tend to cover the cot with towels so if they do puke the towels can be whipped off, rather than the whole bedding changed etc

I also put them in with me so I can hear as soon as they start getting queasy

Was also going to suggest folding a towel in half (double thickness so doesn't soak through) and place it under her head and upper body.

If she's being sick while lying down and still asleep, try to roll her over onto her side so that she doesn't inhale it.

Poor you and dd- hope tonight isn't too bad.

If this is not a stupid question, I will hear her in the night won't I if she is sicking again? (she is in same room about 4 feet away). Sorry if that sounds silly, dd1 has only ever been sick as an older child, and apart from reflux occasionally dd2 has never really vomited either.

She seems more comfy if I hold her on her side while she is actually being sick, slightly upright.

I would sit her on your lap, leaning sideways against your chest and covered with a towel (both of you). That way you couldeither let he be sick on a towel or try and get a bowl in the right place.

Poor her and you. It's not nice when they have a 'first' illness, is it? Especially when you're on your own. They usually get over bugs like this pretty quickly though.

I've got that slightly twingey feeling in my stomach - may just be the thought of possibly going down with whatever she has of course.

Thanks Emma, I will leave her on her back for now while I am awake and watching her, before I go to sleep I will tilt her slightly on to her side.

Am sure you will hear her, I always do. They sort of murmur and toss and turn with the nausea before the vomitting starts (IME)

I tend to try and hold them upright to try and catch the vomit in a bowl (nice!)

If you're worried about her rolling onto her back again, place a rolled up towel behind her once she's on her side. Either that or prop her upright to go to sleep tonight.

Cleaning up baby sick is never nice- particularly in the middle of the night.

We have been very very lucky with sickness. The first time dd2 was sick properly was around 2 1/2 years - but she did it spectacularly. All night in a hotel room after a fab wedding we had all been at all day. I rather wished I hadn't enjoyed 4 glasses of champagne.

She didn't know what was happening and kept yelling "oh that's scusting!" We had to apologise to the hotel in the morning as it is hard to clean a carpet at 4am with no cloths etc!

I meant the first time dd1 was sick was around 2 1/2 years!

Me, dp and dd1 all had d&v (luckily dd1 just had v)m when she was 4m

I was bf and had to literally break her off a feed to puke into a bucket

Dp and I were both too weak to pick her up...had to do hrly shifts to look after her

Absolutely horrendous

I lost shed loads of baby weight though

notnowbernard you are cheering me up thank you. My friend had a similar situation to yours but she was sick on her dd's head as she couldn't unlatch her in time!

How was dd today?

Thanks for asking. Stopped throwing up Saturday morning so it seemed fairly short lived thankfully. Also none of us caught it from her.
