Hi guys recently had a laparoscopy on Wednesday and I’m really suffering from the gas they use. It’s very painful in my shoulders and around my ribs and back when walking around. Stomach is very swollen I know it’s only been a few days but does anybody have any advice on how to get rid of this gas?
thank you
😊

Peppermint tea, it was really helpful when I had the gas pain. I also used a heat pad which soothed it. Apparently love heart sweets really help! I didn’t get them as I found out after I was feeling better.

Holland and Barett peppermint oil capsules; I've never burped so much in my life but boy, do they work!

Hey guys. Thank you for the advice! I’m already on the peppermint tea. it does bring some ease but not getting rid. I’ve head that Rennies are good for the gas pain? I’ve never had surgery before I’m just really finding it hard to recover. I just feel very tired and uncomfortable! I thought keyhole is supposed to be less painful but I’ve found this more painful to recover then childbirth last year! Thanks guys

It's not a walk in the park for sure but much better than open surgery. Take it easy,it will be a while yet before you're feeling 100%.

very generally for obvs reasons, it can take a few days for the last little bits of gas to be absorbed but it doesn't respond well to painkillers in the meantime. Some people find that using physics and changing positions can help so that any pockets of gas aren't stuck under the diaphragm so perhaps lying on one side or with your hips higher than your head may help. The surgeons let the majority of the gas out through the laparoscopy ports when they finish so any abdominal distension is not due to large amounts of trapped gas in the peritoneal space. Peppermint and chewing gum can help gut motility, partly because the guts get a bit stunned and sluggish when they're handled and it takes time to come back to life, but partly because a small amount of the gas from the pneumoperitoneum will end up absorbed into the bowels and if motility's a bit sluggish that extra gas feels painful. Most of any residual gas that's used to create the pneumoperitoneum intraoperatively actually gets breathed out though. Essentially, time will heal. If the distension gets worse/bowels aren't working/pain's getting worse etc then that suggests something that needs reviewing.

Try buscomint, love hearts and walking around the house as much as you reel comfortable too.
