Does anyone have any advice on minimising the side effects of prednisolone?

I was put on a course of prednisolone yesterday. I have taken it before but not for as long as this course. Any tips to minimise/ cope with the side effects would be appreciated. I find my appetite doesn’t greatly increase but that was only a weeks course. I find I can get a bit grumpy and run hotter (though that’s no bad thing as I’m usually cold).

The biggest problem I have is the insomnia, I take them early in the morning straight after breakfast. If I go to bed normal time 10-11ish I get to sleep okay but I’m then wide awake by 2-3am and that’s it. I try and go to bed later so I wake up later but by midday I’m shattered.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

I wish I did. I go a bit wired when I take them. Find it hard to sleep and stay awake all night semi-conscious. I once was awake all night drafting in my head what I was convinced was a brilliant children’s book. The next day I realised it was a rubbish idea. I think taking them early sounds like a good plan. Good luck!

How long are you on it for?

Maybe take l’theanine to combat insomnia?

I was on them for two and a half years, i didnt notice any difference apart from the fact my symptoms disappeared. I reduced them very slowly and the only symptoms i had was pain in my fingers which is probably due to my age.

That sounds awful, at least I get some sleep. My body is tired but my brain is wired and wide awake.

Melatonin helped me with the insomnia.

I have am on it for life. When on a large dose I struggled both with insomnia and hunger but on the lower long term dose it’s just the moon face! I hate it.

That must be tough to be on it for life. I’m only on day four and already starting to get a moon face, I felt really sick during the night last night too.

Though I have managed to sleep better i just feel like a bloated whale.

It’s horrible isn’t it, I feel like I just can’t concentrate on anything. I’m lucky that I’m only on a ten week reducing course. It can’t be nice being on them long term like you are.
