Mirtazapine

I'm currently on 15mg of mirtazapine and have been for years for anxiety, my anxiety levels recently are unbearable, I just wondered if anyone had any success by upping their dose to 30mg.

People usually say if you go up on it you can lose the sedative effect, so if you need it for sleep this might be a problem. Having said that, I used to be on 45 mg (then down to 30, currently on 15) and I still slept fine. I was less anxious too but I was pretty out of it all the time, very low energy, fatigue, poor concentration etc. I was on other medications with it though so it’s hard to say which what the mirtazapine was doing in isolation. Who prescribes it for you? Can you book an appointment and discuss it with them?

Thankyou, that's what I was worried about being more sedated. I'll book in to see the gp.

I’m on 45mg for past 2 years and sleep 90% of the time well. I drop off to sleep but there’s weeks where I’m awake every few hours. It’s hell when it happens.
I take propanol for the anxiety

Urgh that sounds super frustrating, does the propanalol help? I tried it for a few days but I freaked out because my heart beat felt really slow.

Yeh, maybe see about adding something else in instead of increasing the dosage. I find mirtazapine great but I wouldn’t take it on its own because it doesn’t really do much for me other than make me sleep. I don’t find it has much effect on my mood either way and it doesn’t help my anxiety. It just sort of makes me dull and too tired to worry about things, but I can sort of still feel the anxiety buzzing away in the background iykwim.

SolielMoonSky · 17/04/2025 20:26

I take mirtazapine at night and Venlafaxine in the morning btw. They seem to complement each other very well - for me, but of course it is different for everyone.

I'm just not good with starting new meds, sends anxiety spiraling amd don't tiu have to be careful with serotonin syndrome, that worries me. I just know I'm struggling so bad right now.

I'm on 45mg of Mirtazapine, I've been on it for about 8 years. Other than the weight gain, I've been fine on it.

Mirtazapine isn’t an SSRI. There’s a greater risk of Serotonin syndrome on multiple SSRIs but mirtazapine isn’t one and the syndrome is very rare anyway.
I get you about the anxiety of starting something new, I’m the exact same. Maybe your doctor could prescribe you some Valium or Xanax to get you through the first week or two.
It makes sense when you’re anxious that you don’t want to do anything to make it worse, but that’s part of the anxiety itself and ime you need to push through that.

Summertimeblahness · 18/04/2025 08:53

I loved mirtazapine. Try going up to see if it helps and if not you can try something else.
I ended up on 45mg for years but it really helped.
Hope you feel less anxious soon.

Thays reassuring to hear. I did reassuring that the higher the dose the more activating it is, which is the last thing I need, but I guess it's different for everyone. I cant touch ssris, especially sertraline, that was brutal, and where my fear of meds started. I

Thankyou, are you off them now?

Yes, I am. It was really hard to come off but I wouldn’t hesitate to go back on them if needed.

Thats good to hear, I tried to lower my dose years ago but the vertigo was hell. I just want to feel normal.

So no worsening of anxiety on a higher dose. I read about it being more activating the higher the dose, was worried it would make me more anxious.

I was on 22.5mg for years but recently had to increase to 30mgs. It has helped with the anxiety somewhat and i do not cry every hour now, so not as depressed.
