Just been to GP, LO is 7 weeks and in agony with what can only be silent reflux. He has every symptom and I am exhausted. GP just now said babies dont get silent reflux, carry on as you are, he'll grow out of it...etc. She spent 2 minutes examining his hips and testicles and spine (had 6 wk check last wk THERE and all fine) and didn't even want to hear about his eating/wind/pooing habits because "an ill baby wouldn't gain weight and he's lovely and chubby". She then gave me "that look" and said "first baby, is it, dear?"
I stormed out and demanded 2nd opinion. Going back at 430...back me up, ladies?

Sorry, I don't know anything about reflux.

However, make a point that you are diappointed that you have had to make a second appointment with a GP for the matter to be addressed. Also, find information on symptoms and treatments for reflux and take a copy with you.

I hope you can get yourself heard xx

DC3 had silent reflux from 6.5 weeks until they put her on infant gaviscon at 6 months. She absolutely thrived the whole time was completely bf and on the 98th centile she however only slept 8 hours out of 24, 10pmish until 6 am ish and screamed nearly all time and was happiest with lots of pressure applied to her tummy.

Thank you...I have looked after babies for the best part of 20 years and I just KNOW that this is what it is. How can she say babies dont get silent reflux...

justabout...i wish, good news is she retires next month. This is the same GP who told my husband (when he went in with a mole that changed) 'we all die of something...'

Is GP in her case short for Godamned Pratt? I hope the second opinion gets the result you and LO need (shame you have to get a second opinion though)

Chaotica · 16/05/2008 16:27

How stupid! Get some infant gaviscon and see if that helps -- DS had reflux and my sanity (and his sleep) was saved by it. (It didn't stop him puking all over the place though... (gritted teeth).)

Chaotica · 16/05/2008 16:28

BTW he was 98th percentile too.

NotABanana · 16/05/2008 16:29

Crap. I was told there was nothing wrong with my 8 month old as he was still eating and playing. I believed them. He ended up on antiobiotics with a bad chest infection.

Pinkveto · 16/05/2008 16:33

Umm, turtle, please if you are seeing another GP can you try and not vent on them? I appreciate you have been brushed off by an unempathetic, end of term itis old lady but it isn't the 2nd GPs fault. If you go in all guns blazing you are less likely to get the sort of discussion you are looking for.

And have to say, I was brushed off about reflux by all and sundry, and then told "its really difficult to get breastfed babies to take gaviscon" so didnt try.

I should have just had a go. And if you get no joy with GP this time would advise just have a go with Gaviscon, it is essentially harmless (although as has already been noted, doesnt stop the puking, just makes it more comfortable!)

merryberry · 16/05/2008 17:07

how did the 430pm go turtle love? if no progress, and there is no projectile vomiting, just go buy gaviscon infant and try over the weekend. also buy a dosing syringe to deliver to the side/back of LO's mouth while holding in usual nursing position. some runs out, some runs in.

it is an over the counter medication, it does not require a prescription...some pharmacists will withhold without a script unless you say it is on medical recommendation. when the hv told me to get mine, the pharmacist barely blinked when i asked for it and just sold me it.

am just gearing into teatime routine, will check back by 8pm.

turtle23 · 16/05/2008 17:07

I was extremely polite to second GP.
And she agreed with me, was perplexed as to why first GP didn't agree, and gave me Gaviscon and reassured me that I was right to stand my ground.

xpost. hurray! deffo give after the feed, i did between boobs and he vommed. it says make it up immediately before giving, but leave 10 minutes after first mix and the lumps will disperse. x

merryberry · 16/05/2008 17:12

turtle, gg's stools have gone more solid (like a far too avant garde paste eyeshadow creme rather than, well you know, runny lumps of loveliness) since he started on the gaviscon, but he is not behaving as though he has even noticed.

turtle23 · 16/05/2008 17:16

Thanks, MB, you're a superstar. I seem to run just behind you on everything..from the longest pre-labour to this. Please let me know what treats we have in store next! LOL

Glad to see you were heard Turtlexx

emma1977 · 16/05/2008 20:16

Glad you got thing sorted turtle23.

My son also suffers from awful silent reflux (so bad he stopped breathing 4 times when he was 8 weeks old) and I sympathise with how miserable it is. I was also repeatedly fobbed off about my concerns and diagnosis (and I'm a bloody GP!) prior to him ending up in hospital.

Giving gaviscon to a breastfed baby is a faff, but possible (we are still managing t at 5 months).

I'm really ashamed by my colleagues' attitudes somtimes.

CarGirl · 16/05/2008 21:18

I found the best way was to put the sachet in a small container with a lid, add the water, shake very hard and then use a nurofen syringe to get it in , sadly I learnt this technique after I'd gone onto fixed feeding and as she was 6 months old and returning to work (to get away from screaming dememted baby) she ended up on bottle from then on!

emma1977 · 16/05/2008 21:31

I mix 30ml water/EBM with 6 sachets of gaviscon and keep it in the fridge. I syringe up 5ml and give it at the start of every feed. Saves faffing around with mixing it up with each dose.

turtle23 · 16/05/2008 21:31

Little angel has just had a feed...and gone to sleep...no screaming, no coughing, no retching...oh dear lord, I may be getting my real baby back! Only wish it had occurred to me that this wasn't colic a week ago!
