Hi I’ve had a blood test this morning for suspected B12 deficiency. Was just wondering how long people have waited for the results if had the same.

Also people who have had a severe deficiency in b12 what symptoms did you have as I have had so many, some I wouldn’t have even thought could be because of B12.

Getting it to a good level so you don’t feel like shit is hard going through dietary changes alone, it can also be medication related and not just dietary (methotrexate/PPIs etc).
Plenty of Drs give a loading dose for low B12 without it being pernicious anaemia because they recognise how debilitating it is to be so low.

I cannot absorb

My GP said my B12 was a’ bit high’ and reading this thread I’m wondering I should adapt my hearing of what she said to “normal”.

@overthinker001

What was your mri looking for?

I had breast cancer last year. I finished my treatment in September. I had a blood test which showed my b12 was 140 but it was missed for 7 months as the GP checking them marked the results as satisfactory.

When my oncologist spotted the results he notified my GP and I started b12 injections. Had them twice a week. I have one to go. Then after 8 weeks I will be retested.

(I've been on omeprazole for chemo side effects on my oesophagus. Apparently this can affect absorption of b12. Neither the oncologist or GP told me this. A neighbour did!)

@tothelefttotheleft Hiya. MRI was for the symptoms that I have been getting in my face and head. All of which are symptoms of low b12 so I’m not sure what the gps thinking was.

I have had to have b12 injections in the past because of low levels. My body didn’t absorb the oral tablets.

im glad your treatment went well xx

@overthinker001 i would keep up the injections for a while, make sure you look at your actual result not what they say is ok. Their range is crazy. It won’t harm you to have a jab every twelve weeks xx

ROOTSTOCKHUMAN · 06/05/2025 08:11

The advice is not to retest if on injection as it will be falsely elevated and they will stop them, and then levels will plummet again, this is what a new GP did to me, even though my old GP told me they never retest once on them🙄

Pearl97 · 06/05/2025 11:37

What @ROOTSTOCKHUMAN says.
once your on them and feel better just keep having them!

overthinker001 · 06/05/2025 12:07

In jan I had an emergency c-section and lost 2 litres of blood which resulted in 2 blood transfusions the initial reason for the blood test was just to check iron levels but because of my symptoms they checked b12 as well.

I’ve rung the doctors this morning and asked if it will be possible to start them as symptoms still present/ getting worse. He has said to wait for mri results and go from there. I’m just going to stick with the private jabs and maybe order from Germany to si going forward

Also to add I’ve just looked on my nhs app and the referral he done for the mri says “urgent 2 week referral, suspected cancer in adult” now I’m even more confused

You must be so confused!!
Hopedully you will get the results of MRI quickly. Keep us updated xx

I had low b12 in my pregnancy at around 22 weeks, found because I had a funny turn while out walking. I have never felt so unwell in the weeks after in my life. Couldn’t even walk 5 minutes to my daughter’s school.
I only needed the loading doses but it was absolutely horrendous until they kicked in.

LushLemonTart · 05/02/2026 12:21

@overthinker001 how are you?

GP is testing me for B vitamin deficiency. Weird foot problem and tingling in left hand.
