At my wits end now. I’ve felt like I’ve had a cold for roughly 4-5 weeks. Symptoms are very much following the track of hayfever but at that grand age of 38, this is new for me.
The only thing that isn’t coinciding is a sore throat, like really sore.
It probably doesn’t help that I’ve not slept properly in all these weeks as I get woken up at all hours of the night and so early every single morning by my nose running like a tap. Constant snot but it’s completely clear, literally like water. I’m so so tired.
I’ve been taking an antihistamine every day for 2 weeks but I don’t think it’s helping.

It probably is.

Do you have itchy ears and red eyes?
Sneezing?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/04/2025 07:45

You can have a sore throat with hay fever.
Hay fever is a proper bastard.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 15/04/2025 07:48

Watching as the same has happened to me this year, I'm 43. I'm sneezing like Mr Sneeze. I took some piriton and it stopped for a day so I'm going with hay-fever and taking it each morning now 😅
Worst thing for me is my sinuses ache like crazy :(

I would say that if you have taken antihistamine (different ones help in different ways) for 2 weeks and there is no discernible difference, then it probably is not. Ask at a pharmacy the best ones for your symptoms.

If it is a really painful sore throat, consider tonsilitis or something like that?

I had a HIDEOUSLY sore throat, the first time I got HF, at 16.
You can develop it at any age.
Birch is the culprit, at this time of year; it was in the newspaper, yesterday, that more people are falling prey to it.
Fexofenadine, otc or prescribed is better than some of the older antihistamines. No drowsiness, you can take up to 180mg/day, but it'll be cheaper if you can get it prescribed. Maybe try that?
You have my sympathies...bad HF can make you feel systemically ill, flu-like and exhausted, in fact.

I think I need to try a different antihistamine, currently using Tesco one a day. I’ve found I’m better sleeping if I take it before bed but then come the late morning the next day, I start to flag again with symptoms.
My eyes haven’t been itchy as such, on occasion they have felt ‘scratchy’, a bit like when you have an eye infection if that makes sense.
I don’t want to even try going to the doctors for fear of being completely dismissed as it seems so trivial but I’ve felt so rubbish the past week alone, it’s impacting my day to day life now :(
I was up at 3am this morning blowing my nose, I’m so tired!

You can take them twice a day (my gp told me this). Also, a steroid spray like beconase (shops own version just as good) can help a lot.
If that doesn’t work, try the benadryl acrivastine one.

Thank you, I will try anything at this point!
