Chalazion

DD had an appointment for an eye test at the local opticians but was told it couldn't be done because she has a chalazion on her upper eyelid just above the eyelashes. Apparently any reading that would be taken would be inaccurate. She came home with a microwaveable eye mask and eyelid wipes. Was told not to come back until the chalazion has gone. Are there any opticians about who can explain the reason for this?

I assume because they don't want any infectious material to get on their equipment?

Justwingingit2005 · 12/04/2025 19:58

My DS had one.
He has eye tests as normal.
We were told by optician he would need a drs referral for surgery as they rarely go with those heated masks. Our optician told us not to bother buying one and use cotton wool in warm water.
Two year wait and it was removed.

According to NICE chalazions are non-infectious. I’m assuming opticians are very conscientious about cleaning their equipment after a patient leaves! DD was clearly told that the test couldn’t proceed because the readings would be unreliable and they wouldn’t be able to give her a prescription due to that. I posted because I was just trying to find out why having a chalazion impacts the information that’s needed for a prescription.

DD was told that using a heated mask was more effective than cotton wool and warm water because warm water doesn’t remain hot enough to make much of a difference. She can’t afford to wait 2 years to have it removed via the NHS - she needs a new prescription because she spends hours looking at screens while working.

Not sure why, but just wanted to post to say that I’ve had chalazions that have lasted 6+ months but eventually went by themselves. Hope this happens to your daughter too.

How big is it? Do you have a photo

TokyoKyoto · 12/04/2025 22:21

Thanks all for the replies. Here’s a photo - I think it may take a while to go.

I had one, used the microwave eye-mask, and it went after a few weeks. I was also told to massage it in a circular fashion, towards the eyelashes after warming it.

cakeandteaandcake · 13/04/2025 08:53

Sorry, this won’t help you but I wanted to say thanks as I’ve got one of these, didn’t know it was called that and didn’t know you could use heated masks so you’ve done me a huge kindness - I hope your DD is ok and it goes soon.

ponderosa3663 · 13/04/2025 10:01

@crossstitchingnana that’s good to hear, thanks.

@cakeandteaandcake you’re welcome. I hope your one goes away quickly as well.

Thanks! I went into Boots to ask for help and they were useless, but have now ordered a heated eye mask.

Good! This is the one that the optician gave DD:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eye-Doctor-Mask-Blepharitis-Featuring/dp/B00BQEWT0S

The packaging mentioned heating it in the oven (which sounded more than a bit mad!) but it can be boiled on the hob.

Her eye isn’t fully open as eyelid swollen
doing a test with eye that’s not fully open is pointless as vision will be obscured

ponderosa3663 · 13/04/2025 10:19

@rwalker she’s not aware that her vision is obscured when she’s looking at screens or reading a book. I’m guessing it’s because her other eye is compensating for that. It would’ve been helpful if the optician had just explained that to her.

Chalazion
my chalazion popped up and since once week it shows like a wound but no signs of draining
did anyone experience similarities
there are no signs of draining at all
and the wound is so sore to touch
I have now stopped warm compressions

Thanks much
