I went the doctors yesterday to get my moles checked and she noted one on my back has 2 colours and blurred edges and referred me urgently so I’m so scared. Anyone else had a mole 2 different colours that used be one colour

Did she look at it through a dermatoscope?

WhatMe123 · 11/04/2025 20:45

I had one like that, two colours, it was fine. The gp freaked out about it and referred me but the dermatologist didn't even bat an eye at it. They said it was a good idea to not get it in the sun as it was a certain type of mole but it was in my arm so I opted for it to be removed. They tested it and it wasn't cancer just a normal mole. But always best to get these things checked out op

I have quite a few strange moles which I constantly worry about. I've been referred several times, even having two taken off that the GP wasn't worried about and they came back normal. GP frightened the life out of me another time over one I wasn't too concerned about but the dermatologist said I didn't need the referral.

It's always best to have them checked, try not to worry, good luck x

@Staceys128 yes it was slightly raised. I asked about that and they said it was just the nature of the mole, they did give me the fancy name for it but I can't remember it. A mole being raised isn't automatically a cancer sign anyway. I've had friends had suspicious moles removed and they were turning cancerous but they were itchy and bleeding if touched.

I think mine is called a compounded Nevus but my doctor said the border is ill defined and it’s got a few different shades of brown in it I’m so scared

Don’t be scared OP. It’s really good you’re getting checked out. I’ve had a few that were referred to a dermatologist and he took one look and just said it’s fine without even getting his little lens out. I think GPs are told to follow the ‘size, colour, edges’ checklist and make referrals based on this. They are not subject matter experts though when it comes to actually diagnosing it.

While I was waiting for my dermatology appt I was reading threads on here too and remember seeing a poster say it’s a very small proportion of existing moles that would turn cancerous. It’s more ones that are new / pop up later in life that would be more concerning.

Staceys128 · 12/04/2025 14:51

Can it be normal that half of the mole is changing colour

To try and reassure you - I’ve had two moles which looked scary. One turned from small-ish, raised and round to being large, long-ish (but uneven, funny shape), multiple colours.
The other was blurry-edged, again multiple colours, irregular shape and changed in size… Both were removed and both were totally fine. (Though the first left me with a big scar as the dermatologist was worried about it being cancerous and so removed a lot of skin around it. This wasn’t the UK where a different approach is taken). It’s good that it’s being checked but please try not to worry.
