Has Tranexamic Acid worked for anyopne with heavy periods?

PortBlacksandResident · 15/05/2008 19:19

The doctor has just given me a course for my heaviest days. I have two or three days each month where it literally pours out of me and i have loads of clots which cause cramping.

She said this is the first port of call and if it doesn't work i'm to go back and try something else.

Any stories? Positive or otherwise??

TIA

Yes they worked fine for me, however I had to take maximum dose and if I stopped after day 3 then day 4 was heavy still tbh. I ended up with the mirena. I don't know anyone who they haven't helped when taking maximum dose. Read the leaflet, start off with the dose you were told and increase to the max if it isn't enough.

PortBlacksandResident · 15/05/2008 19:31

Thanks Cargirl. I'll try it over the next few months. I don't think i can have a Mirena as i have Cervical Erosion.

I took it for 2 cycles, but in the second I got dreadful stomach cramps and had to stop, which was a bit of a shame as it seemed to work so well.

I now take mefanamic acid, which isn't quite as good, but better than nothing.

SmugColditz · 15/05/2008 19:44

My sister uses this and it really helps.

maidamess · 15/05/2008 19:50

yes it works. But don't just take it on your heaviest days, take it for the duration of your period. thats what my doc told me, but I keep forgetting!

cktwo · 15/05/2008 19:51

I have used it and it gave me the runs so badly it was worse that the heavy bleeding. I have now given in to my GPs advice and had a Mirena fitted (yesterday in fact!).

PortBlacksandResident · 15/05/2008 19:55

Thankyou for all your answers. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

Does anyone know if there's any link between heavy periods and being overweight. I could do with losing a couple of stone - would this help or is that a myth?

No idea, sorry. Mine started after having the kids.

chenin · 15/05/2008 20:15

PortBlacksandResident · 15/05/2008 20:27

I'm not overweight and have very heavy periods. So did my mother, who was also not overweight.

Jury's out with me re. TA. I also take Nurofen because Ibuprofen is supposed to help prevent heavy periods. I think the two together help but not radically.

lisad123 · 15/05/2008 20:42

didnt work for me

flossie64 · 15/05/2008 20:46

I used to take it ,before I finished the menopause,it worked well but I did need to take it all the way through . It worked best if you started taking it as soon as the period stared. Also I was adived to take Nurofern along side it on the heaviest days as this improved the drugs performance,it probably helps with the cramps as well.
you also need to drink plenty of water (not wine) as it can dehydrate you a bit.HTH

Sorry didn't mean to post twice

probablyaslytherin · 15/05/2008 20:53

It didn't work for me, plus it upset my stomach.
I got a Mirena in the end which was excellent.

I did read somewhere that if you are overweight you produce more ? estrogen was it? and that is supposed to contribute to heavy periods. Having said that, I am on the slim side and still had heavy periods with flooding etc.

bodiddly · 15/05/2008 20:59

I started taking this about 3 months ago and it seems to be working. But I do find that I need to keep taking it until I have completely finished bleeding or it does start up again with a vengeance! I had to up the doseage though as the original prescribed didn't do the trick. Have you been for a smear recently? If not, it might be worth being checked out.

PortBlacksandResident · 15/05/2008 21:05

wow! Thanks for all your messages. I can see i'll just have to give it go (and go with the flow - will try it as prescribed to begin with and then up it a bit i think.

Does anyone know about Mirena with Cervical Erosion?
