Hayfever - can I cause extreme fatigue?

Hebfgusa · 07/04/2025 07:08

Hi

My hayfever has been bad for a week. I've been taking loretedine. Yesterday, I was so tired, everything felt heavy, I struggled to keep my eyes open and I was breathing faster. I went to bed in the middle of the day.

I have an air filter, I've sat next to that for 14 hours now. I feel a bit better.

I've not noticed fatigue as a hayfever symptom before. Not to this extent.

Does anyone else feel like this during hayfever season or do I probably have something else going on?

Yes, absolutely. When my allergies are bad I often have to have a nap.

WinterIsNearlyHere · 07/04/2025 07:13

Yes, absolutely. Fatigue is always my main hay fever symptom.

HappiestSleeping · 07/04/2025 07:14

Another one here. It is very draining.

Personally almost all antihistamines make me feel very lethargic / sleepy. Piriton knocks me out straight away, but the non drowsy types like citirizine and loratadine make me feel drugged. I find fexofenadine better.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 08/04/2025 19:11

I've been feeling exactly the same today. Strange almost lightheadedness, sinusey, snuffly and wheezy. Take antihistamines in the evening but not really helping at the moment.

Baggyprincess · 08/04/2025 19:19

Definitely. I don’t necessarily notice as it creeps up, not sure if it’s pollen, my reaction to pollen or the effect of antihistamines, probably a combination of all of them. I do notice, usually mid to late July, how much better I feel as grass pollen reduces and HF calms down.

I agree with this

Politenoticed · 08/04/2025 20:54

It will be the antihistamines

I have seen DH have to spend a couple of days in bed with hay fever and he is almost never ill. He wears a top grade mask when it’s really bad and we have a really good hepa filter.

ParsnipPuree · 08/04/2025 21:01

I have a severe allergic reaction to grass pollen where no medication works. Just wanted to say if anyone gets it really badly that a Kenalog jab (steroid) makes it all go away immediately. I have one every year.

PositiveLife · 08/04/2025 21:11

Loratadine makes me sleepy. Oddly I find I tolerate Piriton better than any of the non-drowsy ones.

Hebfgusa · 09/04/2025 06:52

Thanks All. Sounds like it could be the pills or the allergies. I'll switch the pills and experiment a bit to see if it helps.

I've noticed my symptoms are worse than normal at the moment, like@Allfurcoatandnoknickers I'm quite wheazy and my mouth feels more swollen/ itchy.

I might not have noticed the fatigue before because I have small children, in the past I would have just taken things a bit slower if tired.

What kind of mask works for him?

All antihistamines make me feel sleepy. Have you tried a steroid nasal spray?

Onlythemother · 09/04/2025 07:19

Tree pollen is really high atm. The weather looks beautiful but I'm trying to stay inside, door and windows closed and HEPA filter running. Hayfever triggers migraine for me so am tired from both.
Another vote for fexofenadine as it's non drowsy for most people.

UnderTheCover · 09/04/2025 09:18

Anti histamines, even loratadine, have that effect on me.

No but my symptoms affect my mouth (lips, gums/ feels like teeth), eyes, throat, itchy ears and wheezing.

Does the spray just help the nose? Maybe I should try it but that's the reason I have not yet.

Honestly a nasal spray was life changing for me. Tablets do nothing for me I only take them now for bites, but if you persevere with the nasal spray, once it’s been in your system a while, and you keep taking it, next to no symptoms.

FluffletheMeow · 09/04/2025 21:26

Agree with those that say the antihistamines make you sleepy.

For me also the symptoms affect my sleep. A blocked nose will mean it'll take me longer to sleep, and then I'll snore so sleep less well.

Fortunately my hayfever won't be really bad until the grass pollen starts, but love to hear any tips to aid the sleeping!

Hayfever is exhausting! Fatigue is one of the worst symptoms for me

Hebfgusa · 09/04/2025 22:27

Ah ha, this is all very enlightening.

I went to the US for one summer and didn't have symptoms much. I think they must have different pollens, and then lots of air con. But I spent so much time outside and loved it. Summer is more challenging here.

I've noticed my symptoms have got worse recently though. I'm partially blaming having small kids and a few years without working in an air conditioned office due to mat leave.

My hepa filter overnight is amazing. So agree with those comments

I'm going to try nasal sprays, some of the pills recommended and see if the work.

I've seen nasal hepa filters, do they work?

Also the mask idea is intriguing for going through polluted areas in allergy season, as that's supposed to make it worse. Does any one have mask recommendations?

The only antihistamines I can take are loritadine and that very bnew one - which really helps. I also use a nasal spray and it helps reduce the horrible inflammation I get in my nose with hay-fever as well as all the other symptoms. When the pollen count is very high I do get lethargic as well.

Linnet · 10/04/2025 00:27

Fatigue is a symptom I get when my hayfever plays up. I also get wheezy and my throat/voice goes all croaky and I cough. I don’t get the itchy mouth now though although I did in the past.

I take fexofenedine, which has worked brilliantly for the past few years. But last year I had a few occasions where it didn’t seem to work where I’m guessing the pollen was really high.

ive been taking it since March and this week I’m starting to suffer. My nose is blocked my throat is hoarse and croaky. I have friends the suffering the same way. Im hoping it passes soon as it’s just miserable to feel like this.
