Small moveable breast lump, reassurance needed!

So, I’m 47 and perimenopausal. When my period finished last week, I still had a bit of breast tenderness. I had a feel like I usually do and found a small lump just under my finger tip. It’s to the side of my cleavage on my right breast on the bottom half. When I checked again it had moved to underneath my nipple area and was sitting with all the other usual bumpy bits. Since then I’ve been regularly putting my hand down the top of my shirt and checking if it’s still there. Sometimes I feel it straight away, sometimes it’s not there. I have managed to manoeuvre it towards the skin and can feel it’s more like a 1cm oval shape.

I have phoned my gp and have an emergency appointment booked for Monday morning. The sensible part of my brain is telling me that a moveable small lump is most likely something benign…but you can imagine where my irrational brain is taking me.

Anyone had anything similar that turned out ok??

I had something very similar which turned out to be a harmless cyst - hope yours is the same. It was tender and moved around - an ultrasound showed it to be a cyst.

They will probably put you on the two week cancer pathway which in itself is terrifying but remember it’s to rule out anything sinister - far more likely to be benign. Best wishes 💐

9 out of 10 breast lumps are benign. It’s probably a cyst but best to get it checked out.

I can't comment on the moveable lump side of things, but I can offer re-assurance. I had a solid lump, 3cm and went to the doctors. The doctor had a feel and said she wasn't concerned, however, as they take all lumps seriously and don't really know 100% until a mammogram confirms, I was put on the 2 week cancer pathway. I was seen within the 2 weeks at the breast clinic. The doctor will have a good idea if it's cancer or not just from feeling it. So you will get more answers Monday.
The doctor was right, mine was normal calcified breast tissue. They know what they are feeling for.
Regarding constantly touching it, I did this, as it's on your mind. But it's there so touching it won't change anything so I'd try to stop doing that, easier said than done I know!
As a previous poster said most referrals aren't cancer, you have a far more likely chance of it being something else.

Movable and smooth edges is a good sign. I had a 2 by 4cm movable lump a few years ago and it went away after a couple of weeks
The doctor said it was likely a cyst from the feel of it and it was gone before I needed to go back to have it referred for a scan.

I had a firm and very movable breast lump. It turned out to be a fibroadenoma, nicknamed a "breast mouse" because they move around a lot.
It was benign and spontaneously disappeared after about 6 months.

Update…I saw my gp. He had a student doctor with him so they both had a good look and feel. They agreed that there was a 1cm slightly mobile lump in my right breast. I’ve been referred under the 2ww and have an appointment at the breast clinic on Thursday. I’ve been really calm all weekend, but now I’m bricking it!

Does anyone know if I’ll have a mammogram or an ultrasound? As I’m 47 I’m thinking it’s more likely they’ll do a mammogram. Will I get the results there and then?? Oh god, I’m getting a bit panicky now. I knew being referred was a high possibility but part of me hoped the gp would dismiss my concerns and tell me all was ok. Got to be thankful though that I had a quick appointment and the referral has gone through super quick. It was last Thursday I felt the lump and it’s this Thursday I’m at the breast clinic. Gotta love our NHS when it works well.

Hopefully you will get both a mammogram and and ultrasound with the results on the same day. NICE guidelines say anyone with a breast lump should be seen within 2 weeks. It’s better to be sure. Remember 90% of lumps are benign 💐

Hi OP, I had a similar movable lump and was referred on to the two week fast track. I had both a mammogram and ultrasound. I also had a biopsy. I was age 30 at the time. The doctors reassured me that it looked very likely to be a harmless “breast mouse”, and this was then confirmed by letter a couple of weeks later after the biopsy results had come in.

I’m sure you will be absolutely fine OP but I know the waiting is tough. Keep us posted.

Thank you both xx

This has happened to me twice. Both times I was put on the 2 week pathway and given a mammogram and an ultrasound. The mammogram will be first and then the doctor doing the ultrasound will look at the results of both tests and should be able to tell you there and then. Both times the doctor told me they were cysts while I was having the ultrasound! Try not to worry, although I know that is easier said than done.

AndStand · 07/04/2025 17:39

I didn't have a scan at all, just a biopsy.

Puppupandaway · 10/04/2025 12:42

Update….all was fine! I was seen by the breast clinic nurse, who felt the lump. Then I went for a mammogram, followed by an ultrasound and then I was discharged. They said nothing was showing but normal breast tissue. So the lump is just an ordinary bump in the breast. No name given for it, but I’ll keep an eye on the nhs app to see the official letter. So whatever it is it’s benign. I’m so relieved. Also, when I get called for the routine mammogram in three years at 50, I won’t be scared at all. I’ve had more pain having my blood pressure taken!

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and helped me to stay calm through the process.

Ah, so pleased! It’s such a stress isn’t it?!

Big glass of wine (or whatever your alcoholic/non-alcoholic tipple of choice is!) tonight!!

MissyPants · 12/04/2025 02:03

It is a very scary time indeed, but I told you 😉.

So happy for you! The relief you feel is huge isn't it! Now you can relax
