Can barely remember anything since having a baby.. apparently not low iron

Hi,
I can barely remember anything since having my baby 18 months ago. I am also having symptoms of low iron (dizziness when standing up, low energy, heart palpitations) which I assumed was the reason for the memory issues. However I have been for a blood test and the results are ‘normal’. I have attached the results. (serum folate levels 7.7 ng/ml)
What on earth could be causing me to barely remember anything, along with the other symptoms i’m experiencing? I feel like i’m going crazy sometimes and it’s honestly getting me down. My brain just feels like it’s going to explode a lot of the time as I try to remember so many things.
For reference I am only in my mid twenties.

Did you get anything else tested? B12, ferritin, Vitamin D, thyroid etc

I have just checked and they have added more results.. all ‘normal’ :(

Tiredness

My ds barely slept more than 90mins at a time until he was 2. So I was getting maybe 3-4hrs max broken sleep a night for 2 years as in often 45mins max, woken, another 45 mins etc.
I couldn’t concentrate or focus on anything

That doesn't sound right. Any other symptoms - thinning eyebrows, lack of leg hair, getting ill easily? Sounds like a thyroid or pituitary issue maybe. If it's the latter your TSH will be low.

Neurotoxic · 04/04/2025 10:44

I agree with @Baninarama
I had postpartum thyroiditis, similar symptoms.

Puppupandaway · 04/04/2025 10:44

You need to check your serum ferritin result. The result you’ve posted is for your folic acid level…I'm no expert though. I was very lethargic, grey looking and my serum ferritin came back as low. I’ve been put on gentle iron tablets, plus my folic acid was low too. It takes months for them to get in your system. You can buy gentle iron at most chemists, it’s in the vitamins aisle.

Should've added, get the numbers for your thyroid because if it's on the edge of the normal range you can still get symptoms (I think)

Ignore the word normal.

What are your results AND the lab ranges for ferritin, B12 and Vit D?

EDIT - you are questioning low iron but giving results for folic acid, a B vitamin. Ferritin is the iron one

Edited

Ferritin - 36ng/mL (lab range 20.0-204.0)
B12 - 239 pg/mL (lab range 187.0-883.0)
Can’t see anything on there for Vit D
Really appreciate the help with understanding this, as you can tell I really am clueless 😞

The results say - ‘THYROID STIMULATING HORM. Serum TSH level 1.93 mlU/L (0.35-4.94)’
Not sure if this could mean anytbing?

Thank you. My Serum ferritin is supposedly normal too. At a bit of a loss now!!

Tbf looks ok

Ferritin of 36 is low enough to cause symptoms even though labs report it as normal. For example it's supposed to be over 70 (or possibly 100 I forget) for normal hair growth.

LittleGreenDragons · 04/04/2025 13:47

Ferritin needs to be around 70 for healthy hair growth so anything under isn't really good enough despite what the NHS says about 25-30 being "fine". You need your body to be working at a decent level not scraping through above death. (Sorry, a bit cross about that 😬)

B12 needs to be around 300.

Edit - your GP probably won't treat you at your levels so get some iron and B12 vitamins yourself. Feroglobin will help (slowly).

This happened to me after having my first dc was a huge shock for my memory to suddenly be so bad literally immediately dc was born. dc was quite an easy baby so no major lack of sleep and exhaustion. thinking back the low iron thing was probably the issue as I lost huge amounts of hair. I didn't see gp or seek any help as friends etc just said it was "baby brain" and this is what happens.
Almost 18 years later and my once very sharp memory never recovered infact its worse than ever now ive hit the peri menopausal phase.

TenThousandSpoons00 · 06/07/2025 11:31

OP did you get any further together with your GP on this? You mentioned dizziness and heart palpitations when standing up, if you’re still having trouble and t hasn’t been looked at yet it might be worth thinking whether this could be POTS syndrome (have a google and see if you feel your symptoms might match up then perhaps GP could do some extra checks if not already done).
