dd still has swollen glands.

I've posted on here about this before, my dd is 4 years old and for the last nine months she has had some swollen glands in her neck and groin. Yhey are not noticeable just by looking but i can feel them. I've had her at the gp a few times and the hv has had a feel of them and they told me that it is quite common for some childrens glands to be swollen pretty much constantly. Mt hv said that my dd has a slim neck so that makes it more noticeable. I suffer form anxiety and depression and my anxiety centres around my health and my kids health, so this is obviously a big worry for me. I spoke to my gp about it recently over the phone and she said that it does'nt soound at all worrying but to take her back to the gp if that will help to ease my mind. I don't want my dd to have to go through unnecessary blood tests just because of my anxieties.

Healthwise my dd is fine, lots of energy and pretty much healthy apart from the odd colds and viruses, she's actually just getting over a cold at the moment. She also has mild eczema which at the moment does'nt seem to bad.

Just hoping some other people can help to put my mind at rest. I think given the fact that she's had them for so long now that it must just be the way she is. She also has extremely large tonsils and snores terribly at night and the gp did say that that could be the reason that her glands seem to be up most of the time.

thanks for any replies.

i would have thought if they were the sign of any serious disorder, that after 9 months there would be other symptoms,

can you see another GP???

My dd2 also has large tonsils, and virtually permanently enlarged glands in her neck - mind you, she's 18 mos with a big sister at pre-school, so has had endless viruses this winter!

I had feel-able glands all the time as a child, and am perfectly well, so think your hv is right. If your dd seemed unwell, I'd take her back to GP - even if unusually tired - but as it is, sounds as though she's probably fine

Hi KM, my DS is exactly the same, ive also posted numerous times with regards to it. Like you, i have severe health anxiety which centers round mine and my childrens health so i know exactly where you are coming from, even down to not wanting them to go through the trauma of blood tests etc. Do your dd's nodes ever go smaller and then come right up again when she has a virus?

Elibean · 15/05/2008 12:18

mmj, v interesting - dd has mild eczema. I didn't, though

A friend of mine is going through something similar at the moment. Her DS who is 3.8 has had swollen neck glands all winter and naturally she is very worried too. He has had scarlet fever in the last couple of months and the glands were checked out then but they haven't gone down so my friend went back to the doctors yesterday and they have said pretty much what your HV said - don't worry about it. The doctor said that it might be useful to make a note of when they are particularly swollen and when they go down and to come back in 6 mths (!) if they haven't improved.

I think, that since everybody (HVs and GPs) seems so laid back about this that there probably isn't anything to worry about.

Btw, I think big tonsils are very common in small children. I have had doctors comment on the size of DS1's tonsils and even I can see that they were big! However, I was told that they generally go down in size by the age of about 7 so no worries there either.

thank you all so much for your replies, its very reassuring to hear of other similar situations.

loopylou - yes i have noticed that her glands to come up with colds and then go down a little just to come back up again every now and again. They are not overly large, maybe about 1cm on one side of her neck and a few smaller ones on the other side. The anxiety is awful is'nt it? it really takes over your life. I just wish i could get a grip on it.

KM from the way you talk, you could be ME, i really understand honest i do, my ds's glands do the same, they shrink a bit then look massive when he has a cold, from all the googling ive done (and believe me its ALOT) everything ive found says that if they shrink at all then its ok. If you want to keep in touch to compare glands lol or talk through the health anxiety which i understand all to well then email me at louise bell 100 @ aol . com am going to bed now, but will be online first thing in the morning
