Anyone had gastritis?

Hi. Had 3 months dull abdo ache/pain on the right side going into sides. Also indigestion. Had bloods and full abdo scans and all clear apart from ?gastritis. I may need a gastroscopy to properly diagnose but wondering re self help in the meantime with churning stomach feeling which I presume is indigestion.
There's so much choice so unsure whether Gaviscon or Rennie or what? Any advice much appreciated.

I was dxd by a gastroscopy and given lanzoprazole. I don't like medication and cured it by having a bland diet & cutting out gluten, alcohol etc. I have a problem with gluten but am not coeliac, and this contributed to it.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm going out of my mind hehe. Will push for a gastroscopy too (though am terrified at the thought). Did it clear up pretty quickly with the Lansoprazole?

It helped to calm it but I was wary of long term side effects so I stopped, didn't renew the prescription but I'm a stubborn old so and so! I cut out spicy food, alcohol, gluten, pickles, citrus, foods with lots of chemicals and ate mashed potatoes, soups, fish, rice, foods in homemade sauces and eventually it healed up. I was terrified of the gastroscopy but I had the sedation which I think was midazolam and fentanyl and it was fine, it's only a bit uncomfortable when it's initially shoved down & you have to swallow. I had no recollection of it however at my recent sigmoidoscopy with sedation I was fully aware of it but no pain & watched it on screen! Quite fascinating. They let you recover until vital signs stable and brought tea/coffee and a massive pile of biscuits that my partner devoured. If having sedation you'll need someone to escort you home & stay with you, they're quite insistent on it, wanting contact details.

Brilliant thank you. This is so helpful. I've seen some people have it diagnosed with and without a gastroscopy which I don't understand but I'll probably push for one then I know.

Get peptac from the chemist that’s what I got a top of 40mg omeprazole. I had the gastroscopy to confirm gastritis.

Changing what you eat and drink makes a massive difference. Cutting out diet coke helped a lot for me! If it flares up I avoid spicy food, tomatoes, oranges, and all fizzy drinks and I find that pretty much brings back under control.

Oh I also opted for no sedation and went hardcore as sedation can make me queasy. It’s unpleasant but as the just said to me it’s the same procedure whether sedated or not. I gagged a lot but it was over in 5 minutes and found that if I flattened my tongue and took deep breaths it was easier.

Wow you are a tough cookie!! I'm a massive wuss and terrified 😨

I didn’t go for gastritis, but just to re-assure you about the Gastroscopy, I was terrified (my pulse was through the roof) but went without sedation.
It was absolutely fine for me and I’d absolutely do it again if I had to.

For me personally the worst was the gas/air, which made me feel really uncomfortable (and I really badly belched once - it’s ok, just remind yourself that you’ve fasted and nothing can happen). I also struggled with bloating for about four to five days after, which was longer than I had expected.

Everything else was totally fine (and I struggle with my gag reflex at the dentist or when bushing back teeth) - the throat spray isn’t the nicest but when you know what to expect (it might feel like you can’t swallow or breathe) and you remind yourself that you can’t it’s fine,
The thing that helped is to focus on your breathing throughout, I didn’t really gag at all when it went in or came out. They took six biopsies (from my oesophagus) which was just a weird sensation but no pain or anything.

It’s obviously very different for everyone but you will be fine! (And the theatre nurse told me that she was terrified when she had one done, even though she attends them every day. So the team will completely understand and reassure you).

I’ve recently been referred after seeing GP for reflux issues, GP wouldn’t prescribe anything until I’ve been seen, due to my DB having had oesophageal cancer. I’ve cut out cakes, chocolate, biscuits, alcohol, spicy food and meals with rich tomato based sauces and honestly I’ve not felt this well for months, I’ve also got so much more energy so I am continuing with this, only having occasional small portions of these things, it’s only been 3 weeks so will see how I am once appointment comes through.
