Top tips for sleeping when congested

OK so I’m 40 and have had approx 1million colds in my life so far but I don’t know if it’s just age or post-Covid whatever, but when I get a cold now I have the worst congestion at night! never had this problem a few years ago - congestion never kept me awake as much as it does now.

I’m currently propped up as much as is comfortable, drinking a hot tea but I know as soon as I try to sleep (because I’ve been trying for the last 4 hours) I’ll be waking up instantly unable to blimmin’ breathe again. Nose totally blocked, but the worst part is the catarrh in my throat which feels like it’s drowning me. This is something I’ve only experienced since having Covid but happens every time I have a cold now.

Anyone have any non-obvious tips for relieving congestion esp. at night? Or am I going to be watching Garden Rescue all night? does anyone swear by a humidifier (not sure I could stand the constant hum)? TIA

Otrivine nasal spray is always helpful for me and sleeping more propped up

probably won't help for tonight @CheddarCheetah

comprehensive list here

Sleep sitting up. Basically use as many items as you can find/need around the house to prop you in an upright position. My preferred technique is using the duvet from the spare bed rolled up plus every pillow I can find.

Perfect thanks! Haven’t thought to try an antihistamine before bed but makes sense!

I’m currently propped up on a corner sofa (we are on holiday so I have decamped downstairs so I don’t stop my husband and DD from sleeping!) with all the cushions and pillows I can find 😂

Nasal spray, calpol plug in vaporizer, vapor rub

Personally I prefer the Otrivine nasal drops instead, but anyway there's nothing better than this product. Solves everything!
