Calorie counting while pregnant

I’m currently pregnant and in my second trimester. Before I was pregnant, I was calorie counting and managed to lose almost 4 stone. Since being pregnant this time, I gave up counting calories and have put on quite a lot of weight. I’m now at the stage in pregnancy where I don’t feel sick so would like to start counting my calories again. Obviously I won’t cut my calories down too low. Has anyone done this while pregnant? Is it safe? I just really don’t want to keep putting on weight at the speed I have so far in this pregnancy.

Honestly don’t. Focus on your baby- congratulations. Midwifes will pick up if you’re gaining too much weight, just enjoy growing a baby.

I’m no midwife or doctor or nutritionist so not an expert. I am however, a significantly overweight woman who is 9w4d with a much longed for ivf pregnancy. From reading I’ve done, one needs 2000 calories in trimester one and trimester two and 2300 calories in trimester three. So nothing crazy but you definitely need to not restrict. I had thought that a baby could just live off my fat if I didn’t eat but it seems it’s better to eat a standard amount of food so the baby gets a variety of nutrients.

I appreciate the worry. I’m 14 stone and I would hate to weigh more! Apparently, overweight women like me can just put on 0 in trimester 1, 5 pounds in trimester 2 and 10 pounds in trimester 3. So I’m just aiming for that. People who are normal weight (like I presume you are) can put on about 20 pounds total and underweight women can put on 30 pounds. It’s approximately that much.

There’s so much to grow like the placenta, the baby and breast and uterus tissue. Plenty of calories is important. My husband says I can go on ozempic after pregnancy if I feel really bad. Pregnancy just isn’t the time to restrict.
