Worried about Liver ALP levels

Please may I ask how you got on. My ALP was 215 in July 24 (Dr did not call me as my thyroid dose was too high. I was retested for my thyroid in Oct. 24 it went back to normal but my ALP was still high and had come down to 199. She went onto ask about my bones and I said I felt ok. She said no worries, enjoy your Xmas and let’s see afterwards. After the call I remembered that I had twisted my ankle back in May. I saw a muscular specialist and had an MRI which showed slight swelling on the ankle and I had a steroid injection. Called the Dr back and she said she’s not worried about me as the swelling must have caused the elevation. I asked if I needed another blood test and she said steroids mess with bloods and stay in your system for 3 months. I am now getting myself worked up as I do suffer from anxiety. I don’t know if I should make another appointment for bloods just to put my mind at ease. Thank you

A high ALP can signify a bone or a liver issue. You can get a bone specific ALP test, together with a full liver panel to find out which is causing the high reading. In your case it may be a vitamin D deficiency which can also result in high ALP levels. Get back to the GP and find out which applies to you. Liver, bone or Vit D.

Take it from there, it sounds like vitamin D deficiency to me. Did you have a vitamin D assay blood test? If not, maybe you should get one.

My Vitamin D level was in its 50’s I can’t remember the exact number.

She did mention bones which made me think about my ankle as I had a constant niggling pain which I didn’t take any notice of.

Vit D count Below 50 is considered an insufficiency. Below 30 is deficiency. For comparison, mine was 108 on the last regular blood test and is usually around that.

Would you consider supplementing with Vitamin D anyway in the meantime? As you probably know, Vit D can deplete over the Winter anyway. Mention it to the GP next visit, but you can take it yourself in the meantime.
