Threadworms in a 17 yr old boy

My son is 17 and really suffering with an itchy anus. He says it is unbearable at times and he can't stop itching especially at night. He is really worried to stay over at his girlfriends and he hasn't said anything to her about it but she knows something is wrong. I've told him he needs to stay at home overnight this weekend so he doesn't infect her if it is worms

So the two things are worms or piles? The pharmacist said it is unusual for a teenager to have either.

He is very hygenic and there are no children in our house or his girlfriends house that he could have picked it up from and he doesn't have any contact with small children any more so I don't where he could have got it from. Being 17 he is really embarassed about it - so I have suggested putting sudocrem on before going to bed and have bought him some Ovex to take and asked him to look in his poo which he says there is no way he is doing.

If isn't worms or piles what else could it be?

He could have picked them up from any surface touched by numerous people - shop counters, buttons on a lift, public toilet, door handle etc etc. And he doesn’t need to stay over at his GF’s in order to pass them on, if he isn’t a scrupulous hand washer, obviously after going to the loo (or on waking if he scratches in the night) but also before eating, and/or if she isn’t. Sure the ovex will work quickly though.

Why won’t he look at his poo?
My teenage daughter had them this week, just one of those things.
