Does this look like a tick bite?

I was at my allotment a week ago. Came back home and felt some irritation on my leg. Without looking I just scratched my leg and felt like I removed some clumps of soil from my skin. When I looked I had a small bright red dot. Next day there was some irritation around it and that kept on growing. I went to the pharmacy on Tuesday and they said to just monitor it and because I might be pregnant they didn't recommend to use any treatment on it. The rash grew since slightly.
I applied some magnesium sulphate paste tonight to see if it draws anything out.
My GP has no avaliable appointments until later in the month. Wondering if I should worry and ask for an urgent appointment.

I did scratch around it maybe once a day. Gently but still... it's itchy but not unbearable. It also feels a bit lumpy. Not hot to touch.

Can you attach a pic?

bubu24 · 28/03/2025 20:48

Image is under review apparently but hopefully it will appear soon

It's not showing well in the pic but there is redness around it. Attaching another pic

Looks like you’re allergic to insect bites…get some antihistamines and bite and sting cream

SkaneTos · 28/03/2025 20:57

If you felt like you removed something from the leg, then it might be a tick bite.

Saisong · 28/03/2025 20:59

I have seen tick bites that look like that. Not sure that much can be done from here though. Keep a look out for a bullseye rash developing or flu type symptoms?

Calliopespa · 28/03/2025 21:00

Yes.

Get antibiotics.

MargaretThursday · 28/03/2025 21:05

It could be, but the one I had that looked like that was a Blandford fly. Nasty little things. I ended up swollen between my toes and my knee and on antibiotics.

MyrtleLion · 28/03/2025 21:11

It's a bite. As PP said, take antihistamines. I would see the pharmacist again or go to minor injuries unit if you have one.

bubu24 · 28/03/2025 21:35

Thanks all. I'll go to the doctor tomorrow. I removed the magnesium sulphate paste and it's more irritated now.

@MargaretThursday that sounds awful! Was if a quick or slow progression? For me it's been a little over a week now since the bite.

I tookamore pics. I think I am getting obsessed and worried sick now. I hope I dont get Lime disease... 'm doing ivf atm and had an embryo transfer the day after the bite. I'll message my clinic too so they can advise on safe treatments, although no doubt the GP will know anyway.

It doesn't look like the classic bullseye rash.
If you feel fluey in the next couple of weeks, it might be worth going to the GP.
Lyme's doesn't always have the rash.

You seem to have been bitten by something. Try some antihistamine - tablet and cream.
It looks a bit red so look out for signs of infection.

Lymes is easily treated by antibiotics provided you get the medication within a window ( about 3 months?) of the bite.

People get long-term illness with Lynes if they miss that antibiotic window

Oh sorry I missed the complication of potential pregnancy. But I think the lymes antibiotics are not necessarily the scary ones. But you do need to get it seen in case it is that.

I think only about a third of lymes infected tick bites develop the bulls eye rash.

Your latest pic makes me a bit jumpy as DD did have Lyme disease and I can't remember exactly how hers started (though thr first pic certainly wouldn't rule a tick bite out, we've had loads ). But if you get a circle that grows and widens that is enough for a diagnosis. And that would need very fast antibiotics (at double the usual dose if things are the same; we were given the wrong one and at too low a dose by gp who didn't know about it) .
Only about a 3rd of Lyme cases do get the bullseye rash so I would be tempted to ask a professional . Hopefully it's nothing but good to be cautious

DH was bitten by a black ladybird that looked like that last month.

We have tons in our house as they haven't fully woken up and flown out of the windows yet.

Our GP identified it when DC was also bitten years ago. We do live in a tick area and GP is used to looking at bites around here.

Yes a knowledgeable gp should be able to distinguish op. But that red ring alone would have me checking …

Schoolrefusa · 28/03/2025 21:57

Ps your average GP may not be familiar enough as ours wasn't which delayed recognising it / effective treatment. I think yours is hopefully a normal insect bite but if it's ever needed we were helped massively by a charity called Lyme disease action when needed information .

It’s hard to tell but it could be a tick bite. I had one last summer in Scotland. I rubbed it off before I realised what it was so it left a bit in my back - mouth? It got itchy and a bit sore - like when a you have a splinter that goes infected - so I kept a plaster on it. After a while the bit worked its way to the surface and came away. Sorry I can’t remember how long this took but it could have been a couple of weeks. I wasn’t ill in any way. Obviously if you feel unwell or feverish then see your doctor but otherwise don’t worry.

I t was about 3 days I think from bitten to swollen. It was very itchy over that time too.

Bobbi73 · 29/03/2025 02:16

I had a spider bite on my leg that looked a bit like this. Apparently, it’s not uncommon in the UK but most people don’t have a reaction. Get it looked at though if you’re worried

bubu24 · 29/03/2025 16:00

Thanks everyone. I went to the UTC today. They didn't think it's a tick bite, or anyway the rash they say doesn't look like Lime disease. They prescribed antihistamines and antibiotic cream as the rash looks even more inflamed. Hopefully this solves it. Thank you again to everyone who took the time and responded to my post. Much appreciated.
