Please help with the state of my feet!

This is super embarrassing but my feet are disgusting, the worst they've ever been. I have athletes foot in multiple areas, chilblains, fungal nail infections on multiple toenails, and to top it off I have Raynauds so my feet are permanently cold. They are so, so dry on the soles and heels and I've had so many chilblains this year too. The colour of them are just rank, permanently mottled.

My feet have never been in the best nick but never this bad, ever. I neglected them during my pregnancy last year (baby about to turn 1) and just haven't got round to dealing with them other than filing the dead skin every now and then.

Because my feet are always freezing due to the Raynauds, I pretty much NEVER go barefoot indoors or wear open toed shoes out unless it's like at least 28 degrees outside. I wear bedsocks in bed! So I know this has probably contributed.

With summer not far and a holiday in June I desperately need to get this sorted. I'm still breastfeeding so I think some medications for fungal infections can't be taken if I'm right.

Can anyone give me advice about how best to get rid of all this ASAP?? Best medications, any 'natural' remedies that actually work, I'll take anything.

BTW I'm only mid thirties and I don't smoke or have diabetes, am also a normal BMI (if that's relevant)!

I have Raynauds and have had awful chilblains on my fingers this year. First time, I get them on my toes every year. I’ve discovered that I have both Raynauds and Erythromelalagia. Which explains why my extremities are always lobster red. Even thought they blanche white and hurt like hell if it’s cold out.

The best medication for athlete's foot that I've used is Lamisil Once. I've found Excilor - the kind that you just paint on - to be the best over the counter medication for nails, but your doctor would be able to prescribe something stronger - tablets are available. (Ah, have just noticed that you're breastfeeding, so the Excilor might be your best bet.) Curanail isn't as good as Excilor, in my opinion.

A moisturiser does more for hard skin on the feet than filing, IMO. I was my late husband's carer. He was diabetic and the docs commented on how good his feet looked. I used Allpresan for his feet.

ETA Apologies everyone - I've done it again: hit 'quote' instead of 'reply'.

You could try shea butter for the dry skin.
I have Raynauds and my feet are cold unless I am walking. Do you keep active? It might improve your feet if you exercise to get your circulation going.

BereftBeyondBelief · 28/03/2025 01:47

I don’t have Raynauds so you may need to do some more research but I have found Apple cider vinegar amazing for foot soaks and fungus, Epsom salt footbaths for dead skin removal and one of the those Scholl electric foot files. However, please research if these are ok with Raynauds first.

Soak your feet in diluted apple cider vinegar. It will fix the hard skin and the fungal infection.

Go to a chiropodist… they’re miracle workers. Having a chiropodist appointment will mean your feet are then in a better starting point for following the advice for home remedies.

And just do it, don’t delay out of embarrassment. Don’t feel you need to get your feet in a better state before you can possibly see a chiropodist (the equivalent of cleaning your house before the cleaner comes). They’ve seen much, much worse feet than yours.

Bubblebubblepoppop · 29/03/2025 06:45

Great tips everyone thank you, will try the Excilor and the ACV. Chiropodist once I have spare cash.

@Speckson I'm relatively active running around after two kids etc but not as much as I used to be. When I used to vigorously work out 3-4 times a week my feet were definitely better so I do agree it helps. Trying to get myself to at least 2 fitness classes a week but it usually ends up being 1.

It's weird that the Raynauds in my hands is nowhere near as bad as it was when I was younger, but my feet seem to have got worse with time.

Podiatrist visit. Don't waste your time and money on creams, overnight socks, peels etc. you need someone deft with proper tools and knowledgeable

Onlyvisiting · 29/03/2025 06:51

Obviously check all of this is OK with your conditions- but I'd
Soak in epsom salts regularly (dry thoroughly afterwards)
Treat the fungal infection/athletes foot with Canasten cream (1%, available from a pharmacy)
And moisturise with CCS Swedish formula foot care cream which is the best moisturiser I have found and I actually use it almost over.

But also- seeing a chiropodist/podiatrist (I'm not sure which) would be ideal. And asking a pharmacist for advice in appropriate treatment for the fungal infection and athletes foot would be sensible.

Re the exercise. I guess it makes sense as it will improve circulation and circulation will help any healing etc.
My mum has these as a physio thing. Sth similar or a stepper to do 10 minutes at home each evening rather than have to get to a class might work better for you?
