DD 16m has had the runs for 5 days now - at first mushy goey pooes but now just brown water. I have stopped milk, am giving fluids with just plain starchy stuff but she is eating next to nothing and has really dropped weight. In her self she is still perky and cheerful but before she does a poo will writhe around in pain a bit. Docs has sent a sample off which will arrive friday morn. Can I really carry on like this until then? I am v concerned. No fever or sickness at present.

advice really appreciated xx

Yes but she won't drink it - she drinks other fluids though. She too is on Goats Milk produce...poor thing is like a tap going off at the moment.

Don't know if its any help but my DS had really bad diarrhoea following a gastro bug (we all fell foul of it!) when about 6mo.
I was really worried as it was literally brown or yellow water, every hour at its worst, that went on for nearly a week and then seemed to resolve itself.

I had to continue giving milk as he wasn't weaned at this stage, it may have added to the lenght of time of illness but without it he would have been starving

I phoned NHS and they told me what to look out for in terms of him becoming really ill instead of just the diarrhoea.he was fine though. Sounds like the Gp is taking it seriously though having taken a sample.

If yur DD seems ok in herself then I wouldn't be too worried about waiting til friday, but keep a close eye on her!

none of mine have ever liked diarylite!horrid stuff!i remember syringing it in trying to get a bit in.it is very worrying i know just how you feel-thinking of you and hope you get answers and solutions soon.

thanks all - still yellow runny poo this morn. I just wonder how long she can go on with so little nourishment. I think I will just have to wait until the test results tomorrow - hate taking her to the docs just for them to say nothing, that's why I try here. Maybe I will try NHS direct...

they let ds go on for months and said so long as not dehydrated it was ok-obviously i said it wasnt ok.

Whenever my two DSs had something similar as toddlers it always lasted 7 or 8 days before it got better, so you aren't quite through it yet. Thankfully, just when you think they are never going to get better they begin to recover, usually the day after I have taken them to the doctors for the second time.

It is horrible for you all but if she is perky and drinking she is probably not too ill. You just have to sit it out.

I tried restricting all sorts of things but in the end one doctor said not to bother as if it hasn't improved things by the time you get to 6 or 7 days, it probably isn't going to help to continue to restrict things. He said they should eat what they want if their appetites are poor. He was right, on that occasion, anyway.

I hope your DD feels better soon though.

thank you so much - have just started introducing milk again and is making no difference either way. Just hope it isn't bacterial the idea of anti B is just awful with her tummy so stripped x horrible damn thing !
