Perianal abscess - any experience?

I had a surgery to drain 2 abscesses around my groin a few weeks ago. Never heard of them before. They popped up overnight and 2 days later were big enough that my GP jumped on her feet and referred me to a general surgeon for a drainage immediately (I’m fortunate that it was covered by insurance ). Probably the infection was caused by MRSA so I’ve been given stuffs to do decontamination. No fistula thankfully.

I haven’t been able to sit for 3 weeks now as the wounds are right on the bum. One of them over granulated and may need to be reopened to get the pus out. A new small lump now appears nearby. A nurse who changed my dressing thinks it’s unusual to have a new lump and perhaps I should push for an MRI or a scan. My boyfriend thinks perhaps I should push for a dermatologist to see why the lump keeps popping up. Another nurse suggests buying a donut seat so I can sit down.

Does anyone have any experience? How long did it take you to recover?😕

what does the surgeon suggest - they'd be the person to ask? If it's really a perianal abscess then it's not something dermatology will be much use for. If there is pus in a cavity that's healed over it's pretty unlikely to get better by itself - the pus needs to be able to get out. This sort of stuff is very routine for general surgeons so best bet is to get advice from whoever did the surgery/get follow up from that unit.

Anaesthetist and no personal experience but anaesthetise a lot of pts with them

Go back to the surgeons, it's nothing to do with derm.

Recurrent abscesses need a diabetes screen as unknown high sugars predisposes it

You’ll need an mri of the pelvic area. Your surgeon should refer you

@Greybeardy @36and3 Thank you. I will discuss with the surgeon in the follow up.

@Destiny123 diabetes hasn’t crossed my mind! Will ask for a screening in my upcoming health assessment. It would be quite a shock to have it as I’m quite fit and have a good diet, but I do know several people who have it with no reasons!
