Is cerazette superior to generic desogestral?

I want to try the mini pill to help heavy periods. I’ve tried the mirena before and it was hell - constant bleeding. I can’t take oestrogen due to aura migraines.

As the title says, is cerazette actually better than generic cheaper products of the same drug?

I expect it is not superior at all. I was on marvelon combined pill for years and they changed me to the generic version, on the basis it was exactly the same, but cheaper to prescribe.
Think that stands to reason with any drug/medication.

You can pay 40p for generic paracetamol, or £3 for branded, the ingredients are the same.

They’re exactly the same - I’ve had Cerazette, Cerelle and now a different generic version and there’s no difference.

Officially, there’s no difference. It’s like ibuprofen/nurofen. However, I got on fine on Cerazette and felt rubbish on Cerelle. On Cerelle I had constant spotting, lanky hair and loads of spots.

I much prefer Cerazette - I know it’s supposed to be the same but Cerelle was horrible for me.

I’m on the pop and it is random whether I get the branded or generic versions - I haven’t noticed any difference between them.

I had previously had constant bleeding with progesterone contraception including the mirena, and I did in fact have lots of very long bleeds when I started the pop. I did lots of research and found that taking 2 pills per day instead of 1 could help, talked to doc and agreed to try it. Since I started I haven’t bled at all. Just wanted to pass on the tip - as a fellow heavy bleeder - it sucks and this has been a revelation

I found no difference and it's really helped lighten my period significantly iv gone from wearing super plus plus tampons alongside an extra large sanitary towel to a bit of blood when I wipe. I'm no longer anemic all the time and haven't had any side effects that I'm aware of

Uppitymuppity · 23/03/2025 19:16

Technically they shouldn't be different, however I love cerazette and it's been amazing for me for several years. Before that I was on the generic version and I kept spotting and it just didn't suit me, so for me there must be some differences.

I have endometriosis and was pain free on cerazette for years, got ovarian cyst like pain within a couple of months of going on the generic substitution so I paid to go back to cerazette.
