Sudden appearance of acne - I'm 61!!

Last April I was on holiday & pretty-much overnight acne appeared on my cheeks. I blamed the foreign water & hoped that it would improve when I got back home.

However it's persisted.

I rarely wear make-up so it's not that & can't be make-up removers as only wear make-up a couple of times a month & went for 3 months without wearing any just in case.

I only wash my face in plain water so it's not soap or any other facial washes.

I have a very good diet with lots of fruit/veg etc. Other than arthritis, I'm fit & well & only take vitamin pills, low dose of mirtazapine & use ibuprofen gel & paracetamol tablets for arthritic pain in knees & hip. I always wash my hands after applying the gel so it's not because I touch my face with that on my hands.

I've tried all kinds of facial washes intended for teens from Boots, no improvement.

I'm 61 & beyond menopause.

My DH keeps telling me that he loves me & isn't bothered, but I'm gradually retreating from social contact as it's so embarrassing to have acne at my age.

I'm wondering what may be causing it. I didn't have acne even as a teenager, just the odd spot.

Any advice please?

See a doctor because it might be acne rosacea. I have it and it's a nuisance but there are treatments available on prescription. When I first got it I was early 50s and it was spots, a lot like teenage acne, but I don't tend to get them any more.

Thank you. I've made an appointment with GP, the earliest they can see me is 4/4/25.

I so wish I was living in the 19th century when I could wear a veil over my bonnet so as not to scare small children - I look like I should be in a burns unit 😩

Well not too long to wait and I hope they can give you something that will help. I've tried everything and I find Metrogel (prescription) stops the spots and for the redness I like Prosacea (which isn't sold in the UK but it's often available on Ebay or Amazon).

I found cutting down dairy and sugar helped. And stopping with all the creams etc just washing affected areas twice a day with soap
