Dd (5 1/2) hasn't eaten since Saturday lunchtime ...

Dd started feeling unwell on Saturday afternoon and wouldn't eat her dinner. She didn't eat all day on Sunday, yesterday or today. She's drinking lots and had the odd ice pop so I'm not worried about dehydration. She hasn't been sick or had diarrhea although she complains that her tummy hurts. She's got a huge headache so I've been giving her Nurofen and she's got a mild fever on and off. She's got no energy at all and is very lethargic.

I've been feeling grotty too. Nauseous (though haven't been sick) and totally drained.

Is this a tummy bug? Any ideas?

gp i think.

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2008 15:34

As long as she's getting fluid down, she can survive on that alone for ages. But I agree GP sounds like the right thing to do just in case...

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 15:35

Yes, I suspect I should take her. Tonight or tomorrow? She's fast asleep at the moment after having a huge weeping fit because she felt so lousy.

What might it possibly be? She's had chickenpox so she can't be sickening for that.

Emergency appointment tonight I reckon!

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 15:38

Ok, I'll phone them at 4pm to see if they've got a free slot. They're just going to tell me it's a virus and send me home though aren't they?

When children of her age ( up until the age of 12 I think actually ) have any kind of throat infection, ear infection, chest infect etc... you get the picture... they also often complain of tummy ache. INfact, it can be the presenting ailment. They have a gland that comes up, low down in the abdomen, which when enlarged, gives them 'tummy ache' Its just a galnd which would come up to fight infection, much the same as any other, so nothing to worry about in itself.

Its difficult to sat what it could be with such little info ( I know you've said what you can! ) and not seeing her. oh, and not actually being a GP! but, I do have paediatric experience as a nurse - so am talking sense I promise!

So long as she is well hydrated, not eating is a symptom of what ever is going on for her. You've checked for rashes etc, and she's not complaining of a stick neck or sore neck at all with the headache? Can she touch her chin to her chest?

If no to the latter question, take her straight to GP, and tell them her sypmtoms on phone especially htis one .

Stiff neck with headache, and not being able to extend the neck down to the chest is a sign for meningitis, of course i'm not saying this is what the problem is, just that if this is present then it possible.

Its equally possible, and more probable that it is a virus. Horrible nasty little virus's going around currently, this time of year breeds some nasty ones. Bless her. Keep the fluids going and take to GP.

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 15:51

Thanks susie, all advice most gratefully received. She was complaining of a painful neck this morning and said whenever she moved her head a pain shot down her spine. But since then she's been up and around (albeit slowly) and has only really deteriorated in the last hour. When she wakes up I'll see if she can touch her chin to her chest. Her fever's not amazingly high though and there's no sign of a rash at all. Plus this all started on Saturday so if it was meningitis wouldn't it have peaked by now?

Possibly, it doesn't always follow a set pattern but, yes, my inclination would be to think it would have by now... not a direct answer i'm afraid, as i'd hate to say yes, and be wrong.

I'd probably actually give her a little nudge early. Again, not wantig to alarm you at all, just if she's said that about her neck, i'd want you to get that checked out asap. You don't need all the sigs to be present i.e. rash and headache etc, unfortunately, some children have one or two signs and symptoms, some have more, some have one. it varies, so as I say, i'd hate to be advising you wrongly.

Please don't think i'm trying to alarm you either. I just would hate you to sit on it. FAR better to put your mind at rest .. and mine?

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 16:02

Yes, I'll go and check on her now I think.

She's not been extremely unwell, just lethargic, a bit hot and with zero appetite since Saturday teatime. I'm slightly less worried than I might be because I'm also feeling grotty although not as bad as she is.

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 16:11

She's totally asleep, very peaceful and not at all hot to the touch - should I still wake her up?

OP posts:
susiecutiebananas · 13/05/2008 17:09

Sorry, I had to sort 2 small people out. I'd say certainly now, if she's still asleep, she's had a nice little snooze so wake her up now.

Try and get an appointment this evening though.

let me know how she gets on?

Trust me, it'll most likely be a virus, or indeed what you have had. LIke I said though far better to get it checked out.

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 18:06

Thanks again susie. I woke her up not long after 4pm and she was really grotty for half an hour but has since had a carton of mango juice and an orange ice lolly and has no sign of a fever. The GP didn't have any emergency slots (makes me mad they don't reserve some for kids!) so I'm going to get her an early night and then see how we do in the morning. She's got her school trip tomorrow, she's been looking forward to it for absolutely ages and I was meant to be going too, but I don't think she'll be up to it. I've avoided telling her so far.

susiecutiebananas · 13/05/2008 19:21

Oh, bless her heart. Not easy to understand when you are little hey? Poor little thing.

Glad she is a little perkier. I really hope she feels a bit better tomorrow anyway, even if not on the school trip. Take care.

imaginaryfriend · 13/05/2008 21:42

Thanks susie, she managed some milk tonight and went to bed with no fever for the first time since Saturday so I'm really hoping we're past the worst.

OP posts:
susiecutiebananas · 13/05/2008 23:54

So pleased Oh fingers crossed hey. Let me know how she gets on tomorrow, if you have a chance. Give her a little squeeze from another MN mummy

imaginaryfriend · 14/05/2008 18:03

Thanks susie, we woke feeling pretty rough and probably foolishly dragged ourselves out on the school trip which was a bit of a disaster health-wise as dd was really poorly. Just on the way to the emergency GP with her now. She's got a huge fever and has even been refusing to drink today
