Trapped nerve in back, bed bound and single parent?

Bl4nking · 19/03/2025 19:31

I’ve hurt my back lifting my son 2 days ago, it only started hurting yesterday at work but by the time dinner came around I was unable to walk. I crawled into bed and it took about half an hour.

I’ve woken up today and couldn’t even sit up, I’ve been for a wee twice, both times it took about 40 minutes to crawl on the floor. Luckily my mum came over to take the kids to school and pick them up and do dinner for them.

I got a gp app over the phone and they’ve prescribed cocodomol and diazepam which I’ve had alongside loads of heat and ibuprofen and when I tell you it has not even touched the sides. I’m completely fine when laying down but the second I sit up or stand or crawl it is agony. No shooting pains down my legs, so not sciatic, Has anyone had anything like this at all?

You poor darling.
That’s awful.
Yes it has happened to me.
The first time it happened was about 15 years ago.
Eventually, after a couple of days the pain abated.
I’m very careful now as I occasionally have had it happen again.
Hopefully the medication does the trick.

Lovemybunnies · 19/03/2025 19:37

Yes but not quite as bad as you. I’ve been on the floor not able to get up but then able to walk the next day. Can you find a good hands on physiotherapist? I have one who can sort me out in one to two sessions.

Mancala · 19/03/2025 19:40

I have damaged my back before (bulging disk) and it was hellish before it was under control, I couldn't sit/lay/stand/exist without pain so you have my utmost sympathy... I think you need to do what you need to do to ride it out long enough to give it a chance to start healing, then reassess then.

CavaInTheSun · 19/03/2025 19:41

Can you get to an Osteopath? I had this and it was a herniated disc. Osteo really helped.

goodnightgrumble · 19/03/2025 19:43

It's really tough. Gapbapentin helped me. I was the same and could not walk or even crawl to the toilet. I have had a spinal injection and that has really helped

Loveshine · 19/03/2025 19:45

I had a similar thing happen to me in Jan - lifted my little girl and was useless for a week. Codeine sends me loopy so couldn't take it when she wasn't in nursery. Heat felt nice but only thing that helped was using ice packs and then an osteopath.

Oh, I’m pleased that it cleared up after a few days. That’s what I’m really hoping for because I’ve literally just had a house offer approved yesterday (swings and roundabouts eh) and I’m pooing myself about having time off work and it affecting my mortgage offer :/

Oh bless you, it really is unpleasant isn’t it. How long did it take to clear up?

Glad you have your Mum to help. Hope you start to feel better soonFlowers

Yes, I've had similar, I wasn't a single parent at the time but am now and the thought of that happening again now I'm on my own is terrifying. I've had 2 emergency c sections and was fine with just paracetamol and ibruprofen, the prolapsed disc in my neck is the worst pain I've ever had.

I agree with trying to see an osteopath, mine kept me sane.

Codeine barely did anything for me, I needed strong anti inflammatories. Ibruprofen didn't touch the sides, I tried Naproxen at first and eneded up on a fairly high does of Etoricoxib. I took Amitriptyline for the nerve pain, that took a few days to kick in. Call the doctor tomorrow and let them know the pain relief isn't working and keep going back until you can feel the pain is tolerable.

I’m going to ring tomorrow and see if I can get stronger because I really can’t be out for too long and an osteopath is a great idea, thankyou

Thankyou, my 6 year old is also having the time of her life. She helped me put my trousers on this morning because I’d only managed to slither out of the bath like a slug into bed and after she’d done turned to and said ‘oh god, is this what it feels like to be someone’s mum’ 😂

Yes happened to me just before Christmas. Had to stay at my mums for almost a week so she could help with toddler and baby. I could barely walk. My hips were actually wonky from the pain of it. I had a few sessions with an osteopath which really helped but it really was agony for a few weeks

Plugwug · 19/03/2025 20:14

Yes I had similar , herniated disc. Tens machine was a massive help to me . Just a cheap Amazon one with lots of extra replacement sticky patches. This combined with painkillers got me through.
hope you get some relief soon op, it’s hideous.

Goatblu · 19/03/2025 21:11

I also recommend seeing an osteopath asap. I did this last time it happened to me and it really did help.

Zelda93 · 19/03/2025 21:20

I had this and was prescribed the diazepam but it only got better when I doubled my doseage for a couple of days following the guidelines of the leaflet rather than what the dr gave me.

StarDolphins · 19/03/2025 21:23

I have just got over a trapped nerve in my shoulder/neck and it was HELL I got strong codeine from the Dr & it did nothing at all. I was absolutely desperate & miserable. Booked an osteopath & it went in days. Could you do this? It was the best £55 I have ever spent!

User5274959 · 19/03/2025 21:31

It's horrific, you poor thing.
I had a trapped nerve in my neck, was also a herniated (bulging/slipped) disc.

Pregabalin helped (similar to gabapentin) so ask the doc about that. And see a physio/osteopath/chiropractor so they can tell you gentle exercises to keep it mobilised

User5274959 · 19/03/2025 21:32

Apparently higher up neck ones get quicker by themselves sooner than lower down/sciatica ones so take heart from that

autisticbookworm · 19/03/2025 22:02

If codiene isn’t working you can ask for stronger meds (usually tramadol is next step) but you need to try meds for three days before changing. My consultant recommended 3 days bed rest plus meds then try ti get moving gradually. Nhs has physio exercises for lower back you can start on the bed. Very small movement. If you are taking strong meds more more than a few days you need something like lansoprozole to protect your stomach. As you start to recover slowly reduce your meds. When you are feeling better start strengthening your core - Pilates, yoga, swimming, walking and se a physio If you can afford to.
