I haven't had a coldsore in years, but one sprang up yesterday, and today has become the worst I have ever had, and I look and feel hideous (luckily wfh today). Went to the chemist, he suggested I ask my GP for acyclovir, as well as buying the otc creams and patches, as it's so bad! GP just called and I have thr prescription, so trying to attack this horrible beast from all angles.

I am googling now, and have seen this:

Has anyone used it? Any feedback? No reviews on the Boots page yet.

I used to get cold sores all the time (think every few weeks) started taking lysine three years ago and probably had two very mild ones in that time. It’s been a game changer for me

Lysine tablets?

Lots on there. Any particular brand recommendations?

Herstat Propolis Ointment

Hope the link works!

Going gluten free resolved mine

Interesting! I am willing to do that! I have actually cut right back on gluten this last month as I am trying to shift a bit of weight, I will commit fully now.

Thank you. I am on my second little block of five now, taking religiously. Got it about 24 hours after the first tingle. Do you keep some at home ready then? I got this on prescription, do you think they'll give me a second round just in case?

Definitely stressed and run down, but have had a shocking few years with more stress than now, and didn't get a coldsore, weirdly.

I actually think this was triggered by a visit to the dentist last Friday for a crown, it REALLY hurt, and he was quite rough with my mouth trying to get it in, and it's on the same side where my lip was being pulled out of the way.

I have them on repeat so keep a stash for that tingle. The Dr was happy to issue it.

The tablets I am on, ACICLOVIR, they are in a little blister (apt!) pack of five x 5, so you take five a day for five days.

Oh wow haven’t heard of this. Is it prescribed?

they truly are the worse thing ever. Had 2 last week and my period felt bloody through the floor mentally and physically with it

EyesoreColdsore · 18/03/2025 20:20

mlc0 · 18/03/2025 20:09

I used to get them horrific all over my lips till I got accloyvir off the gp, I took 3 months worth and it stopped the one I had in its tracks and haven’t had one since, that was 2 years ago

Did they happily prescribe you that amount in one go?

Mine was, chemist wouldn't just sell it to me, but I have seen you can get it online, though it is £.

Thank you! I'll ask soon for the same. I need to be able to nip the tingle in the bud. Had hoped I was in the clear after such a long break, sadly not.
When will they find a cure for this bastard!!!!!

I’ve suffered from them terribly since I was a child. I’m embarrassed to say that until recently I didn’t realise that taking painkillers makes a huge difference in stopping that horrible crawling, itching feeling that you get in the early days. I’ve always had mixed results with Zovirax as mine often come during the night. I was advised by a pharmacist that Zovirax has a very short active period so should really be reapplied every 20 mins when you are trying to avoid a cold sore. I’ve never had much success with that strategy though.
I can highly recommend Cymex cream to aid and speed up healing. It keeps it soft and stops it from getting infected. It was recommended to me years ago and it is the best healing cream I’ve ever tried.

65 years old. Suffered all my life. Nothing beats the bastards. Vinegar or cheap aftershave to dry it up. Keep it soft and it will spread.

Currently sporting a corker right in the middle of my bottom lip.

Oh bless you. Empathy to you. I did put perfume on it immediately, as I had nothing to hand til the next day (today) when I could get to the chemist. I fear it may have made it worse. But i have used perfume before, and felt it did work. I read conflicting reports on the internet.

Painkillers wouldn't occur to me either.

I wish I'd have gotten Zovirax, he pointed me to a brand called galpharm, not sure it feels as good as I remember Zovirax being.
I'll check out the cymex cream, thanks, though gosh I have ordered a lot of stuff for this now.

Yes he did, because up until then I was having really bad ones once a month which was also leading to impetigo

Planetmonster · 18/03/2025 21:30

Ok so I am 50, used to have awful regular cold sores, had a repeat prescription for the tablets. As I am 50 I started taking a daily dose of bovine collagen, for hair. Just cheap one from Amazon.

well cold sores MUCH reduced. Might be concidence, might be menopause, but has made a massive difference. Deffo worth a try and report back!

was also taking Lysine.
Also ask your Dr for Fuscin acid, it stops them getting infected, which they often do. Can’t recall the spelling, will look it up.
vitasorb is Poundland version for Zvorix but £1.50
plus also used to get them any late night, any boozing, any fun !

Sympathies !

Seconding this recommendation. I've suffered horribly for years and this is the best thing I have found. I reapply it frequently and it takes the pain out and often you can avoid the horrible crusty bleedy stage if you're very strict about not picking at it. I bought a herpopen but felt it did nothing other than hurt to use.

Planetmonster · 18/03/2025 21:46

Fusidic acid. Stops them getting nasty and makes them go quicker.

I am also 50. I'll look into getting a repeat prescription. I'll pass on the beef juice though!

Thanks for the vitasorb recommendation - that is a good price.

Don't want to jinx things, but after a day and a half of the prescription tablets, I've woken this morning and they aren't worse, like they usually are on Day 2. So it may be that these tablets are working, or it may be a few of the other things I have attcked it with (lavender oil, perfume!), or, even possibly those non-brand patches the chemist gave me are doing a better job than I gave them credit for.

Could get worse later, but right now, they aren't all crusty and puss-y. Still unsightly and red raw, but I've put two more patches on (so big is it) and they are doing an ok masking job.

This thread is so useful. I suffer from them too and had a whopper the other week. I have struggled along with aclovir and patches - neither of which have ever worked very well, but this time I tried bonjela and it really helped - both with pain and healing - no bleeding split lip and much quicker recovery. But my recommendation sounds v pedestrian compared to some of the treatments here!!

That's a second recommendation for bonjela, which I've not tried before, hope my order arrives for it soon. Glad it helped you.

Sorry so many of us struggle, I really hope they find a cure soon. I know there are worse things.
Would be gutted if my kids have to deal with this. At least for me I only caught it in my 30s.

To add, I do also have the Virulite coldsore machine, which doesn't seem to be easily available in the UK right now, and I definitely did not spend this amount of money on it, though it was a good 15-20 years ago, I think, that I got it. I think it helps a bit.

@EyesoreColdsore - I had it so badly as a teen - like an attractive moustache of coldsores from lip nose! And I was so worried that I would pass it on to my kids when they were little - so far no sign though.

People don't realise how debilitating it can be - sometimes I get flu symptoms and also a kind of neuralga along what I suppose is a nerve in my face where the virus lurks - urgh! (this is possibly not scientificly very accurate 😉).

Anyway hope something works - do remember to try things one at a time and systematically or else you won't be able to quite see what works and what doesn't.

Argh I am so suggestible that I can feel the tingling now!!!

That must have been awful - peak snogging years!

Yes, same re kids. I have been really careful, and really hoping it's working - no outward signs in either.

The inside of my mouth feels awful too, clammy and gunky, yuck.

I hear your advice, but I have already just been attacking it with anything and everything, so desperate am I, so it's not particularly a scientific experiment. I am waiting for the device I ordered, and really hoping it was worth the £££. Most of my orders should arrive today or tomorrow (and I didn't use Amazon!).

I hope you don't come out in one, Stop tingling!
