Dental implant experiences

Can anyone share their experience of having a dental implant fitted please?

I am considering having a lower molar implant but, apart from when the tooth was removed (which needed to come out!), I have never had any work except a filling in my teens so the level of intrusion of an implant is worrying me.

Is the months between implant fitting and crown fitting really awkward? For those who’ve had one or more fitted is it worth it?

If anyone can share their experience I would really appreciate it. I’ve been mulling it over for a couple of months now since the initial implant appointment but not been brave enough to book in for it to be done.

Following as I am in the same position. How are you feeling about the gap? I have lower first molar extracted about 6 weeks ago. And I am managing quite well with the gap , although I rarely chew on that side. But I feel it’s really not visible to anyone else.

why are you thinking about implant? Is it because of the look/feel now the tooth is missing? Or are you concerned about other teeth moving and causing problems? I am undecided and wondering if teeth moving is a future problem for me now. Or not.

I have 2 implants (done in Budapest), I had the posts for 6 months and they were fine. I love my implants. So worth the money. I'd been self conscious of the gap when I smiled for ages and now it looks great.

They feel a bit weird after you get them done, a bit like having a dead arm, for know it's there but you can't feel it properly. It took a while to get used to but now I love them!

I went to Kreativ Dental in Budapest as they were state of the art and half the price (Inc. Hotel and flights) than UK dentists. My mate had hers done there and she had loved them so I went too.

Mine has been missing about 2 yrs now, I am not bothered about the gap being seen as it’s so far back no one can really. I have got used to eating without it and it’s not really a big issue but I feel I’m young enough (mid 40’s) that an implant would be worth getting for what I hope will be many decades of use. It is a little awkward eating some foods - peanuts mainly!

This is really good to know, thank you! I take it you had two separate trips to Budapest 6 months apart? Did the dentist not need to do a pre-consultation before you actually had the implant fitted?
I may look into it as it’s nearly £3000 for one here 😳.

my dentist has advised taking vitamin D for 6 months every year after the implant is fitted to help the bones- I am not the sort of person who would remember to do this and think my diet/sunshine exposure is enough. Did the dentist in Budapest recommend this too and do you?

I have two molars that are implants. Totally fine, both the process and the result. They feel like regular teeth.

stanspan · 18/03/2025 07:28

@Bartgsorry should have said, yes I am worried about the other teeth moving and also that side of my face sagging more than the other as I get older 🙈.
The implant dentist told me my bone where the tooth is missing has shrunk down slightly in the 2 yrs since it’s been gone, but it didn’t sound like that was anything unusual.

@W0tnow that’s good to know, thank you ☺️

I had an implant done here - bottom molar - you pay as the work is done and not up front so the cost is spread over a few months. The gum is always numbed so you don’t feel anything when they drill into the bone. Basically, I had no problems at all but I had it done by someone who specialises in implants.

Violet80 · 18/03/2025 07:34

Following as I have a top left molar that’s broken and beyond saving with any other procedure apparently. Dentist recommends an implant but it costs thousands.

It’s the 4th tooth in from the back so unfortunately would leave a visible and fairly large gap once removed. TBH I’m petrified of the thought of the procedure, mainly the drilling into the jaw bone part, plus it is just so expensive, we’d have to use savings to cover the cost. So I just keep putting off doing anything about it!

LasVegass · 18/03/2025 07:38

I’ve had several in the UK. Very expensive but I’m so pleased I got it done. A big smile and I forego any amount of “tweakments”; it gives me confidence now I’m in my 50s. Plus the actual health-related benefits.

Springhassprungxx · 18/03/2025 07:43

I had one done a few years ago and it was worth every penny. Don't even think about it now

LasVegass · 18/03/2025 07:56

Mine felt like wood at the beginning, a very strange sensation. They feel very natural now. I paid in drips and drabs as the work got done, sometimes a couple of hundred, other months it was £800-1000. It cost more than my last two new cars, which is why I still drive a 12 year old car now. No regrets. I look well after my teeth as I'm older and I dont know if my gums and bones would be as good for more work.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/03/2025 08:07

I had to have a bottom molar out, the one in front of the wisdom tooth. I’d planned to have an implant but the dentist said it’s best to get a CT scan because occasionally there’s a nerve that runs shallower than the post would be there. Turned out that was the case so I haven’t had it done. It’s fine tbh.

Reginald123 · 18/03/2025 08:07

I would recommend getting a few quotes. My quotes for one molar ranged from £2,200 with bone graft to over £4,200 - all the quotes were from implant specialists in a 20 mile radius.

My own dentist was the higher end but on my research they didn't seem to be using the best implant manufacturer so I went to one of the others . So far impressed by them as mid way through the process as having to wait 4 months in between implant snd crown as I was told that in some cases with grafts it is best to leave it longer.

I have dental phobia but went for the implant because I didn't fancy problems with the teeth loosening on either side. Living without the tooth has been fine for 8 months as I don't think it is that obvious but hopefully I have made the right long term decision.

seanconneryseyebrow · 18/03/2025 08:21

I’ve had mine done this year and here’s my experience. It could be just me though. So bottom front ones had to be removed due to infections. The whole process cost 5k and has taken a year in total! The reason being the bone was weak and they wanted to wait longer to heal (so I had to have this awful denture that ripped my gums apart it was awful). Then they did the post that goes into the fun (it was really painful and I looked like I’d been beaten up). It was rejected / had to have it removed, wait 6 mths and then try again. In the end I had abour 10 appts some of which were v painful during and after and in chair for over an hr.

they are finally done. They look amazing - life changing for me cos I loathed the denture. I felt so old and ugly. I have sensory issues so it drove me crazy. So I’m thrilled now (and just hope to god they don’t get rejected).

So for me it was awful process but for front teeth I think it’s worth it. I would never even consider doing it for back teeth. Just not worth it at all in my view. But my experience is maybe in unusual I don’t know. They certainly did not prepare me for how much it hurts. Look up peoples faces after it on tik tok! Mine looked like that each time.

sorry if that puts you off just my honest experience .

stanspan · 18/03/2025 15:34

@Violet80i think it’s the drilling into the jaw that is putting me off too 😬

Many thanks all, these are really helpful for me. I think I just need to get booked in but was holding back for some reason but as most of you have had good experiences it reassures me.
@seanconneryseyebrow- really hope they don’t reject from you after all you have been through with it 🤞🏼.

I had a sinus lift as my bone had worn away. You go to Budapest for a consultation and can either start the treatment immediately or go back. They pay up to £200 for the flights and hotel as long as you book in the treatment with them. They pick you up from the airport and drive you to hotel and then from hotel to clinic. They do have a dentist in London and you can get checks etc there. Their aftercare was amazing, including flying me back over just to check the tooth when I had a concern at their own cost. I was quoted £7.5k in UK. Entire thing for 2 implants plus the sinus lift cost less than £3.5k. It's not for everyone but they were great for me.

This was all 7 years ago so prices etc might have changed. kreativdentalclinic.eu/en/free-consultation?kdcpc=search&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjws-S-BhD2ARIsALssG0aze8dPXeh8EkhJN60VL8fQCLJPpWunBY3INA6yzYy4I6_Os97RW3kaAqlfEALw_wcB
