Anyone had nutritional supplements on the NHS?

I
had a private bowel resection after an injury. The dietician has advised fortasip compact protein along with food advice. My appetite is really poor and have lost weight. My GP practice is saying no need to prescribe

wondering if anything else can make myself or ways to argue i need from GP.

BMI?

MousePolice · 15/03/2025 17:55

I’ve had them prescribed in the past due to low BMI and kidney disease but they are so revolting that I’d advise you do everything you can in your power to avoid them. They are truly disgusting.

I followed the other dietary advice like having lots of snacks, butter on everything, rice pudding with cream and jam, milkshakes etc and did put weight on slowly.

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 18:06

So my BMI is overweight however in the two months since surgery have lost 7% of body weight Also had signs that struggling eg ketones in urine, poor wound healing and vitanine and electrolite abnormalities on blood tests.

They are disgusting (crohns here) however the dietitian can prescribe them. Put them in the fridge on the coldest setting and they are just about bearable. The coffee one is nice if it’s super super cold or warmed up (you can freeze and heat up all the flavours) and the vanilla one is ok if you freeze it and eat like an ice lolly / ice cream.

Then im with the GP

how much overweight are you now?

Bristollocalknowledge · 15/03/2025 18:08

You can buy them over the counter although you may find that regualr protein shakes are nicer.

Ketchupbroc · 15/03/2025 18:09

How long ago surgery?

and losing a bit of weight post surgery is totally normal and 7 % of someone already overweight is not something to write home about

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 18:10

yes have been trying the food advice. My recommendations are low residue high protein. However get verry bloated say 4 hours after eating this pain and nausea puts me off eating.

OP posts:
Catatedog · 15/03/2025 18:14

surgery was 2 months ago.

recovery has been complicated by a bowel that keeps potentially partially obstructing,, possibly due to adhesions and a CT showing colitis.

I had to have them in hospital a few years ago and agree with pp that they are absolutely revolting. Coffee is the best but I soon got fed up with that. Just held my nose in the end and gulped it down.

Ketchupbroc · 15/03/2025 18:15

How overweight are you now having lost the 7%?

Nursemumma92 · 15/03/2025 18:20

The GP will have criteria to follow in order to prescribe the supplement drinks, perhaps you do not fit that criteria if you are overweight (I'm not saying this to be rude or judgemental but sometimes weight or BMI comes into this).

As your dietician has recommended these, then I would contact them and ask them to contact your GP with their recommendations as their advice should be followed in this scenario. Hope you can get sorted and heal soon.

Hamiltonfan · 15/03/2025 18:22

Dietitian here. Speak to your dietitian. She can contact GP and explain her rationale which I'm sure will be inline with prescribing guidelines. This kind of weight loss is not healthy and, regardless of your BMI, you are entitled to Fortisip on prescription. Good luck

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 18:23

In terms of protein shakes are there any that dont have artifical sweeteners?

yesterday made a shake with greek yogurt, a banana, weigh protein powder, some powdered peanut butter and vanilla, and pumpkin spice. It was delicious but combined with food i ate only hit about 1100 kalleries Nd then struggling to eat today due to verry sore and bloated stomach and lots of toilet trips. Have only had quarter piece of white toast with peanut butter, half a yogurt a boiled egg and tablespoon of spoon of mashed potato.

I think you can buy Ensure without prescription - don’t know if they’re the same ones as the prescribed ones.

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 18:40

My dietician did write to the GP recommending two compact plus protein drinks a day.

rationalle was written as over 5% weight loss in less than three months.

Possible short bowel syndrome affecting absorbsion.
disease related malnutrition nultiple surgeries in tghe past year involving nmanagement for potential refeeding and clinical signs of poor intake eg slow wound healing, ketones in urine and vitamin and electrolite abnormalities.

I have recieved a nottification on NHS app that doesnt meet prescribing criteria for this or colastiramine for bial acid malabsorbtion.

you can buy them online. Your private surgeon will also be able to prescribe them.

turkeyboots · 15/03/2025 19:21

Go nag your GP and the dietician and your consultant. You won't be able to make anything similar at home as Ensure has all the dietary things you need. Which i think is why they don't taste great.
DS has them regularly for Crohn's disease and will only drink the vanilla plus version. Try a range to see which you find acceptable.

Hamiltonfan · 15/03/2025 19:22

Yes get your dietitian to write again x

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 20:50

Thanks @turkeyboots sorry to hear your son has crohns. While I agree they wouldnt win any taste awards I liked having them in hospital as it meant wasnt having to push myself to eat to the point of pain. My scans did show bowel inflammation so potentially has some simmilarities to crohns.

Thanks @hamiltonfanis i often n the case that dietitian advise is ignored by other HCPs? I felt in hosp that they did not view fortasip as seriously as other prescriptions. This included a time when they were considering a pic line for feeding and fortasips would often get missed out. It feels a simmilar thing with the gp where they arent prescribing colaseveramine and fortasip. Surely someone who has assessed the patient and trained in diet, is best place to know what is needed.

do you know of any good low residue nutrient dense recipes. Ideally things can cook and store or freeze. Getting fed upmaking things and only mannaging small ammounts.

DS doesn't mind drinking them for the same reason. They really reduce his pain and nausea from food.
Apart from the strawberry ones which make him vomit like the Exorcist!
Hope you get sorted out soon.Flowers

Here is some info on low residue diets. They seem more popular with in the US for IBD, and DSs team say it won't hurt, but it's not likely to help significantly either sadly.

Catatedog · 15/03/2025 21:25

@ketchupbroc Is there a reason you are focussing so heavily on BNI? Obviously the heavier soneone is the more weight each percent will be. It to me is.concerning that this much weight is coming off when I am trying my best to have 3 meals and snacks a day. My bowel is not functioning well at the moment meaning I get pain and am sick a lot.

pre surgery I was would ideally have liked to loose 10 kg but wanted to do this in a healthy way right now i feel fatigued, cold, cuts dont heal and my skin is dry and itchie.
