Is this scabies or something else?

A few months ago my daughter started complaining of itching between two of her fingers. Then a few weeks later, this area on her forearm started itching. It's doesn't itch all the time and both areas seem to have phases where it's worse, which makes me think it's not scabies but the area on her arm is expanding now and the itching between the same two fingers is back again. I've got hydrocortisone so trying that atm. It doesn't really fit scabies timeline but due to the location of it. I thought I'd check. No one else is having similar rashes so I think someone else in the house would have caught it by now if it was scabies. It doesn't really look like her usual eczema/dry skin patches though so I'm a bit confused by it tbh. Was difficult to get a decent photo of between the fingers and she'd just been itching it so it's more red than usual.

No idea but a pharmacist might be able to tell you and recommend a cream.

We all got scabies about a year ago and it was really contagious. Think my daughter picked it up from a child at a group she goes to and within days our family of 5 all had patches. So if none of the rest of you have anything I doubt it is that. Plus your photos don't really look like the patches we had. Ours were wider, some about the size of a 5p, some more like a 10p.

Yeah, no one else has the same thing. We all do have eczema and dryness though apart from her dad. Her skin has always been the most challenging and she gets all sorts of spots, reactions, dryness, eczema etc.

@grace11 been given the lyclear to try but only for my daughter. Just read that everyone in the house should be treated but we only have 1 tube 🤔

yep unfortunately you all need to take and repeat 7 days later. It’s a good way to know if it’s scabies too. The cream is super easy to put on - def keep it on for the full 12 hours and cut nails short before putting on.

RealLifeClanger · 06/04/2025 07:51

@grace11 thanks, yeah I don't know why the pharmacist only gave us 1 tube. Maybe because she wasn't sure if it is scabies. I might just try and get in at the gp tomorrow and get her properly looked at or try and see another pharmacist today. This is one of the newer spots that appeared on her inner elbow but I can't see any burrow lines (my eyesight isn't great though).

Might help if I attached the photo... It's on the opposite arm as the original ones.

Looks like it def could be scabies based on our experience. It could be something else but you won’t know because they won’t do a skin biopsy. No one could see burrow lines for any of us so definitely don’t see that as a factor nowadays. We were misdiagnosed for months. Knowing what I know now I’d do the cream asap to see if it helps. Then you know. It’s not painful in any way and just gets absorbed into the skin so not slimey. My dd screamed and then I did it and was like wtf?! You don’t feel anything! She was being melodramatic of course. She’s quite happy having it on as long as there is popcorn and Harry Potter tho 😂

Just on the contagious thing - it took me two months from my dd getting it for me to see anything on myself. And my rash was very different. My dp got it quicker as he has had it before. My other dd took 2 months also. It can take a while as you have to develop an allergy to the mites. Also some people are asymptomatic.

@grace11 thanks for the info. I'm going to try and get a dr to look at it tomorrow but I'm not holding out much hope of getting an appointment.
