How soon would you expect your doctors surgery to see you if you'd found a lump?

My head is all over the place at the moment due to a few different things, so I'm finding it hard to tell if I'm annoyed for no reason. I found a lump in my breast on Monday, and I have a family history of breast cancer. With our surgery you have to use the ask my gp service and submit a request on there, so I did that and explained what I'd found. It's taken this long for them to even acknowledge it, and they've responded to me to say they've booked me a face to face appointment with a gp on the 7th May. Surely I shouldn't be waiting 8 weeks, or is this normal? I don't want to push it with them if that's just a standard time frame

I've had lots of lumps (all benign - hopefully yours will be too) and I've always been given an appointment within 48 hours and then seen at hospital within 2 weeks.
May is not acceptable.

I've had breast cancer already so possibly why my surgery is so on it, but I don't even have to talk to anyone if I contact my GP about a lump. They refer me that day straight to the breast clinic without a consultation (seen at the clinic within 2 weeks).

I’m a GP and would try hard to see all breast lumps same day or next day especially if there is a relevant family history. If someone has no availability themselves because they are prioritising work and can’t make earlier offered appts etc then it would occasionally be 5 days or so. We are advised to refer all confirmed breast lumps through the 2 week wait system to the breast clinic locally.

The appointment you’ve been given is definitely inappropriately long, possibly they’re super busy but they still have to manage issues as they come up, so do contact the surgery and push hard for an appointment at least within the next week. Go in person and speak to the practice manager if needed.

111 may be able to book you into an appointment directly, in many places GPs have specific slots they aren’t allowed to book themselves for 111 to book people into so it’s worth a try. They also give a recommended timescale for the GP to respond, it’s not binding but may make them realise this wait is too long. A walk in centre could probably examine you then send a message to your GP to do the 2 week wait referral so that also might speed things up but you should chase up the referral a few days after and make sure they got the message and the referral has been made ok. Hopefully it is not cancer as you say but just in case you don’t want to regret not pushing harder for an appt later on. I’m sorry this has happened.

It's not good enough OP, you should complain to the surgery manager . I wish you the very best. Good luck 💐
