How long after starting thyroid meds did you start to feel better?

My thyroid results have been borderline normal/high for years but most recent test had my TSH at 14.1 so I'm picking up meds tomorrow.

I have been feeling tired, sluggish. Unmotivated for a few months. How long before i might start feeling some improvement? I know it can take a while to get levels balanced out but I'm living in hope I might feel more energetic by summer?!

My DD has these the effect was really quite quick for her, it's hard to rebe but I'd say 2-3 weeks she was less tired. Hope it makes you feel better really quickly!

MollyButton · 12/03/2025 21:47

They started quickly for me.
But be warned it can also put you on an emotional rollercoaster for a couple of weeks. I would just burst into tears for no reason.
(It worried my daughter but I could tell her it was just my new medicine).

Also depends on what level you need- I had to step up from 25mg, to 100mg over6 weeks so took a little longer to feel better

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 12/03/2025 22:10

pretty much immediately

Apart from my hands not feeling cold all the time I really didn't feel much difference tbh.

Winterymix · 12/03/2025 22:25

I'm four months in - I feel better than I did but definitely not right yet. Ask them to check vitamin levels and iron if they haven't already - they didn't at my first blood test and it's turned out I'm really deficient in Vitamin D which I'm sure is contributing. I hope you feel better soon. I've found the Thyroid UK forum on Health Unlocked to be very helpful.

Oh thanks all that seems really positive. I've been a bit concerned about side effects but hopefully all will be well. I'll look out for the emotional rollercoaster 🙈

Funny you mention cold hands for the last few weeks I have been sitting in the office nursing a mug of tea most afternoons to hear my hands up when no one else feels cold at all. It's become a bit of a running joke 😂 so even if that improves it will be something!

I've had my Vit D tested previously and that was low so now taking supplements. Not had my iron tested. I'll ask about that thank you!

Will start them before breakfast tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

I don’t feel any different. Same as when my vitamin D was rock bottom, I got it way higher and the only thing I noticed was my shins stopped hurting!

Raininginparadise2 · 13/03/2025 22:04

Within a couple of weeks I felt the benefit. Get them to check B12, vit D and iron. Hope you start to feel better soon.

SlamDunkDa · 15/03/2025 19:28

Ah sorry you haven't felt any better, that's not so good. Weird you should mention shins as mine have been quite painful too!

I've to get bloods done in 3 months so I will ask about getting tested for the others too. I already take vit d as that was really low previously and I take a b12 supplement.

I've just started a new job where I am back in the office 5 days whereas I was previously pretty much full time working from home before. I've been finding that a bit of a struggle but living in hope that I might get a bit of an energy boost soon! 🤞🏻
