Heart palpitations with wine

Kate86203 · 11/03/2025 16:22

As the subject says and as with many people on here I've been getting more and more palpitations after drinking wine. I'm 44 and recently had ecg, echo etc.. due to my concerns of palpitations. All tests normal and was told this is a common symptom of peri.
My question is, does anyone still drink wine, even after knowing it will bring on palpitations during the night?! I don't drink often or a lot, but I do like a couple of glasses on holiday, birthdays etc... is it still OK to drink with these palpitations?

I get very hot and flushed even after a couple of sips. I’m 44. Not really noticed palpitations, but I can tell pretty much immediately that my body is reacting to the wine. I just don’t drink it anymore.

Kate86203 · 11/03/2025 21:03

Thanks moveoverdarlin, but wanted to know specifically about palpitations.

Bump anyone?

I would never risk inducing palpitations, so for me, I would stop drinking.

LadyKenya · 11/03/2025 21:10

Ask your Doctor. Your body is telling you it does not like it.

Brentinger · 11/03/2025 21:27

Does it happen right away? Or a while after? I know palpitations can happen when you are dehydrated - low blood pressure, heart has to beat faster to keep pumping Oxygen to the body.

Never heard it from drinking wine but definitely had it when dehydrated!

wheresmyshoe · 11/03/2025 21:34

Yes, I have wine qualifications, a collection built over two decades and a circle of wine friends I travel with. Wine is my serious hobby. I also have palpitations now.
I've accepted it as the new normal and reduced my wine consumption accordingly so that my working week isn't disrupted by poor sleep. If I'm away doing tastings/dinners/vineyard visits with friends I expect I'll be awake at 3am with palpitations and have coping strategies (calming podcasts/audiobooks, water by bed).

Kate86203 · 11/03/2025 21:57

@LadyKenya the cardiologist didn't say I should stop drinking, just that my heart checks were fine.

@Brentinger It's very common after drinking alcohol, happens hours after drinking. Many of my female friends get this now at the same age.

@wheresmyshoe that's really helpful to hear. Like you I also use podcasts as distraction to relax. I love wine and I don't drink a lot, so don't want to stop completely. I also try to rehydrate as much as possible

OP posts:
wheresmyshoe · 11/03/2025 22:06

@Kate86203 and @Brentinger several of my wine friends are doctors and they very much push staying well hydrated. Everyone is chugging water and sipping wine at events/dinners. It does help.

Blueberry40 · 11/03/2025 22:10

I have this with red wine- as well as palpitations I also get a racing pulse and feel very lightheaded and nauseous, even after just one glass. I also get a tingling in my mouth and lips and sometimes rashes. It definitely coincided with perimenopause so maybe it’s something hormonal.

I now only drink white wine and find this better. Apparently the tannins in red wine can cause a reaction and so it could have been this or possibly the sulphites…I’ve heard that organic wine is less likely to cause a reaction but haven’t tested this!

Kate86203 · 12/03/2025 21:07

@Blueberry40 I also find red wine gives me worse palps, so I stick to white.

@wheresmyshoe I agree with staying hydrated and sometimes I put a phizz rehydration tab in my water before bed

I had some wine the other night...First time in ages. Result was: disturbed sleep and mild palpitations. Never again.

Loopytiles · 12/03/2025 21:14

How much wine?

Ilovelowry · 13/03/2025 17:13

I'm the same op.
But mine started aged 32 after having my second baby.

All checks fine.

It just live with it now. You don't notice them after a while. That said, I don't drink anywhere near as much now I'm in late 40s. Can't risk the night sweats.

coxesorangepippin · 13/03/2025 17:18

I've had palpations wake me up in the middle of the night after too much (maybe half a bottle?) of wine.

So now I just have one glass. It's clearly not good for me.

doistayordoigo · 01/05/2025 11:18

I've started getting severe palpitations, last might my heart rate was 140 bpm after three glasses of rose wine. Glad to hear it's not just me as I have to say I find them quite frightening.

Mounjaroversary · 01/05/2025 11:23

Yes I get this too. I'm 39 and any alcohol gives me palpitations now. I really limit my alcohol intake now and to be honest I'd say in a year or two will be trying to go completely tee total.
It's grim but I suppose alcohol is effectively poison but has a terrible effect on peri and menopausal women, I think I read recently it increases the risk of heart disease in women out age by 46%! And that's not even having very much

janeandmarysmum · 01/05/2025 16:13

Aren't palpitations considered a stroke risk? I stopped drinking alcohol 10 years ago because of this, among other symptoms.

WitchesofPainswick · 01/05/2025 16:16

Oh god, yes it's soooo annoying. Wine was my LIFE for decades. Hit my late 40s and suddenly it's wine or sleep.

Generally I choose sleep but a few times a year I choose the palpitations.

Really? I thought they were mostly harmless and people who are anxious just notice them more. I started getting them a few months ago but mainly just because of anxiety. I don't drink wine so not helpful to the OP but this thread is scaring me a bit because I always thought palpitations are fairly common. I've read of lots of people getting checked out because of them and they're almost always healthy. I don't like the feeling though, they are not nice at all.

coxesorangepippin · 02/05/2025 01:58

Yes I get palpations sometimes with wine, but only if it is very hot

🤔

It wakes me up occasionally, very scary

FatOaf · 02/05/2025 11:10

Was the ECG done while/after drinking wine? There are quite a few reports of alcohol triggering paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes. Is there someone in your house who would be confident taking a pulse? If so, could they take your pulse during the day, so they know what the baseline is, and then take it again when you feel the palpitations. It's not so much about the rate: it's about the rhythm. AF is characterised by "irregularly irregular" pulse, i.e. fairly random changes in rhythm. If it's fast but regular it might be a response to a drop in blood pressure when you drink.

Musicaltheatremum · 02/05/2025 12:38

Think we have to remember that alcohol is a toxin and it is obviously not having a good effect if it's causing palpitations. I get palpitations after spirits. Clearly the alcohol is not good for me and I should stop but I don't but really I am probably not doing my heart any good. Alcohol can cause cardiomyopathy(damaged heart muscle) over the years.

I love my wine so not saying what people should do but just be mindful it is a toxin and assess your own risks.

Kattovitpanic · 02/05/2025 12:44

i gave up alcohol completely because of this. If you’ve been checked out as you have, it’s almost certainly not going to harm you. So it’s an individual call on how much the palpitations bother you versus how much you enjoy a drink. For me, wine in particular used to give me ectopic beats literally every few beats the next day and it was really uncomfortable. I was also a bit freaked out by a couple of reports where a few drinks caused ventricular storms and cardiac arrest in people with otherwise healthy hearts; that’s got to be really unusual but given how much my heart reacts to alcohol I personally felt like I wasn’t going to enjoy it anyway for worrying so best just to give up. I do miss it but not as much as I thought I would!

Snowandhail23 · 24/01/2026 09:15

I know this post is old but I've recently started experiencing same as OP after drinking 3 glasses of wine. Had heart checks with BUPA who said all normal, GP has commented could be due to peri (I'm 43).

@Ilovelowry do you still get this and how long do they go on for? Any techniques for minimising them?

I heard magnesium taurate was good for palpitations so was thinking of trying these too.
