How do I get a GP to take my 3yo health seriously

ToreMyselfIntoPieces · 10/03/2025 02:02

Buckle up - it might be a long one. It's nearly 2am and I'm exhausted (of course).

My DD is 3.5yo. since she was born we have had constant health issues, she's literally always sick with something or another. I don't mean she gets colds, runny nose and coughs here and there. I mean dry hacking cough every night, vomiting several times a night 2-3 times a week, gastro, viral infections, diarrhea, tonsillitis. You name it, she's had it. Every other night she has a fever (over 38°) and that is NOT an exaggeration.

She has never slept through the night, she coughs herself awake all night long. She sits up in bed or walks around or snores herself awake. She must be absolutely exhausted all the effing time - I know I am!

From about 7/8months old she started vomiting overnight - all night long - I'm talking major volume and 5-6times a night. It only slowed once I'd nightweaned her from BF-ing so she literally had nothing to chuck up, then it turned into the hacking cough instead which sometimes leads to vomiting. The GP prescribed Omeprazole (even though I told them it wasn't reflux cause it STARTED at 7/8m) and that did nothing at all. The vomit still came.

Now, if she just cries, she vomits, it's like a natural response because she has vomited so much in her life.

She currently has Glue ear. We are waiting for surgery for grommets. She has had it for 6 months. She has had 3 ear infections since Feb 2024, she has had gastroenteritis 5 times, and HF&M. She caught impetigo last week. She's got a fever again tonight.

We've tried her dairy, soy and gluten free for 4 months - didn't make a difference. We have been referred to a gastro specialist and they did major allergens testing (skin prick) and she isn't allergic to anything they tested for.

She's on probiotics supplements for her gut and multivitamins for her general health. I rub magnesium butter into her feet and legs every night. She eats whole and healthy foods, and will drink well. Doesn't really have sweet food and WHEN she is healthy is a super active 3.5yr old. Nursery says she's kind, pleasant and listens really well.

But she's sick ALL THE TIME and I'm exhausted. We have another DD (11m) and now I'm sure that her regular illness isn't normal as our youngest is not the same at all. I had nothing to compare it to before.

I keep telling the GP there isn't something underlying going on but they just DONT HEAR ME. they just treat the symptoms in front and don't listen that I'm sure it's all connected somehow. Adenoids? Immune system? Something else.

The GP must think I'm nuts going back all the time but I'm honestly exhausted. I haven't slept since the day she was born. My DH and I tag team sleeping through the worst nights but it can't go on anymore I genuinely am scared for myself if it doesn't get fixed. I am at my wits end.

Why won't they just look at the bigger picture of her health and stop writing it off as one thing after another?

Please is there anyone who can help or advise? What am I supposed to do? 😭😭

How do I get someone to actually see the whole situation and fix it?

It is rare, so unlikely to be this but I would ask about having the test for cystic fibrosis if the more common possibilities are ruled out. It should be screened for in newborns but a few cases are picked up later.

For anyone reading this back, today my DD was diagnosed with coeliac disease and enlarged adenoids and tonsils which are being removed with surgery. We are booked in for a cardiorespiratory sleep study too, to check sleep apnea too.

It's been a long 3.5+ years but we've nearly got answers 🙏🏼

No kids should snore - that could be adenoids. Have you asked GP about that?

🤣🤣🤣
you’ve never heard my youngest then!!
Her snoring was off the charts!!!

I wouldn't be so quick to laugh. My suggestion to the thread appears to have been correct and Adenoids were part of the problem in OPs kids case. I'd be getting your kid checked out too if I were you. Kids shouldn't snore.

@ToreMyselfIntoPieces I'm so relieved for you that you have some answers and some positive steps forwards. Hope all goes well continuing your journey 🤞

my child is now an adult and still snores!

Yeah because you didn't take her to the doctor when you should have done. If a child snores, there's something wrong.

I agree. DS snored really loudly. GP said his tonsils were a lot bigger than average but as he had no other issues then we would keep an eye on it. As he got bigger his tonsils didn't and became more proportionate and he stopped snoring at about 7ish. So it was the right thing for us not to get his tonsils out but also the right thing to get it checked out.

OP it sounds really positive. I know someone else whose 4 year old had her tonsils and adenoids removed and was a changed child overnight. They were amazed. Fingers crossed for the same for you.

JanetRobertaSnakehole · 04/07/2025 10:09

Has she ever been checked for enlarged adenoids/tonsils? They are common in children that also have glue ear. My son had both and would cough and vomit at night all year round. Stopped once they were removed (except when he has a cold).

The rest of your post about poor immunity made me think of coeliac disease.

Edit: sorry just read your latest update. Glad you've been given an answer and hope it gets better for you all soon!

27pilates · 04/07/2025 10:13

Thanks for the update OP, what a relief that you have some answers albeit some challenges up ahead with the planned surgery etc. Best of luck to you, onwards and upwards.

I really had a feeling it would be coeliacs disease, exactly what my son has. I know you tried gluten free before for 4 months and saw no difference but it can take a year or more for the gut to heal once the GF diet is begun, also be very careful of cross contamination of crumbs etc the tiniest amount will cause her immune system to react.

So glad you got the blood test for her and got some answers, it's a scary time after diagnosis - feel free to DM me if you wish, we're only 9 months into our coeliac diagnosis for my son.

No you obviously don't understand that the reason your daughter still snores is because something is causing it whether that's sinuses, adenoids, tonsils etc which has been going on since childhood and you did nothing about it. Children do not snore without there being an underlying reason.

BeeryZ · 04/07/2025 21:13

Go and see someone privately

Mayflyoff · 04/07/2025 21:39

Did you end up going private to get diagnosis? Whilst you've been going through this for a long time it doesn't feel like nhs timescales or NHS multidisciplinary abilities to get a diagnosis this quick from the date of your op.

Not private, we went thru the NHS. We had a gp appointment a week after posting. Off the back of that we had blood tests and paediatric referral. Bloods done march 31st. Paediatric referral on June 13th with subsequent bloods again on the same day. Had ENT consultant appointment on July 1st (which had been referred from an audiology issue from January time so waited 6 months for that appointment) so lucky they coincided.
We had confirmed coeliac results on 2nd July.
We still have to wait for the Sleep Study and another round of bloods and our follow up paediatric appointment in September to see if her coeliac diet is having the required effect and to review the sleep study results for potential apnea etc.
This isn't over, we're just moving forward with some answers now 🙌🏼
Not sure what kind of timescales you were expecting tbh but I think this has taken years, and we're not even done we still need more answers and next appointment not until September so another long wait

I think I've got used to people waiting over a year for NHS appointments and being fobbed off by GPs, so actually getting a pediatric appointment and that being under 3 months wait sounds good at some level. But I appreciate this didn't start when you first posted, you've already been through so much, including being ignored.
