Hello! I got my molar extracted on Tuesday and I already screwed up and the stitches came out last night and some this morning during a salt water rinse and today out of all days is the most painful. The past two days have been a breeze but today it’s a bit bad. Just a very uncomfortable pain and I called my dentist and she said they couldn’t get me in till Monday so my anxiety is so bad and if it is dry socket please give me tips! Also that is my wisdom tooth in the back coming in sideways just fyi thank you!!

only for the last 20 years….

So your advice to the OP would be what?

SoftPillow · 08/03/2025 16:05

I had dry socket (and a post extraction infection to be fair) and it was agony, I’d rather give birth again than have it. I was sobbing at the pharmacy whilst begging for stronger painkillers.

FiveTreeHill · 08/03/2025 16:15

It looks fine.

A dry socket doesn't actually need treating, and it doesn't need antibiotics.

You only treat a dry socket to manage the symptoms. A dry socket will heal of its own accord with plenty of salt water mouthrinses. Packing it will actually slow the healing process, but most people with a dry socket will be in severe pain and therefore need it packing

If you miraculously had an asymptomatic dry socket it doesn't matter, you don't need to see a dentist

I had a dry socket after an extraction once. I wouldn't have known if the dentist hadn't told me at a follow-up appointment. I didn't have any pain but had to have a course of antibiotics.

A dry socket is not treated with antibiotics. It's not an infection

That she doesn't have a dry socket?

That she doesn't have a dry socket?

Just pointing out that the apparently very experienced dentist didn’t actually offer any practical advice, instead choosing to just disparage others who did.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 08/03/2025 17:19

i think it looks like dry socket.

I had the same across a weekend and I was terrified.
this was about 20 years ago and I made the mistake of googling and the internet had people of pictures missing part of their jaws!!!!

it was absolutely fine the dentist just put a poultice type thing on.
my dentist told me those pics were people who left it 2-3 years before getting treatment and had other severe health issues!!!

angelspike · 08/03/2025 17:35

I had dry socket but it didn't hurt, just had a horrible taste in my mouth so knew something wasn't quite right
Yours looks fine though

Incorrect advice is hardly practical advice. A tooth has been taken out. It is normal to feel some pain. My practical advice would be to take some painkillers

rosemarble · 08/03/2025 17:55

I had a tooth extraction in Dec, it went through that white phase. I did a lot of saline mouth washing (not too vigorous) and presumed I'd know about it if I got dry socket. Day 3 is the peak day for it to happen I think.

Wrong advice based on lack of knowledge is not practical advice. It's just wrong. It's not helpful, and creates unecessary worry.

Op asked if she had a dry socket. She doesn't.

A dry socket is not treated with antibiotics. It's not an infection

Well, that's what the dentist said and what was prescribed.

RedRiverShore5 · 09/03/2025 21:31

I have had several extractions and they all looked similar to that, a bit grey, looks fine to me

rosemarble · 10/03/2025 01:45

@LillyPJ then you had an infection or suspected dry socket. Dry socket itself isn't an infection.
