Groin pain when sitting on hard surfaces

For about a year I've had groin pain when sitting on hard surfaces or the floor. It's really getting me down. I've had 6 months of physio to no avail. I've had an xray and they've said osteitis pubis. But no help with how to improve/ make this better. The pain feels like bruising and feels right in the bone. Anybody else experienced this and have any tips for what might help? Contemplating pushing to see orthopaedics!

Yes! I've had this for over 13 years. I'm hypermobile which is the cause. I've mostly managed to get it under control with private physio, physio led pilates, and taking a low dose combined contraceptive pill (hormones have a huge impact). I also had prolotherapy, which is absolutely not for the faint hearted, and generally only available privately, but it did help.
I do get flare ups and have to just rest when I do.

@DelilahBucket wow thanks for replying! You're the only person I've come across to have this as well! Were you diagnosed by X-ray or did you have further testing? I'm awaiting a private appointment in a couple of weeks. I find it so incredibly painful. I've had physio and do Pilates twice a week. Interesting you say about hormones. Do you mind me asking how old you are? I've just started a trial of hrt last week! Sorry for all the questions. As I said not come across anybody else with the same issue!

@Katie342 I got a diagnosis privately from a muscular skeletal doctor after various scans and x-rays through the NHS. They kept saying there was nothing "medically" wrong me, I kid you not.
I'm 39 now. I've always been hypermobile, and had a horrendous time during pregnancy. The major problems started after I'd had three combined pull packets back to back as I was having awful periods, on the advise of my doctor. It spiralled from there. I was absolutely convinced it was hormone related, I thought I was pregnant to be honest. It was only after a lot of research I learned how hormones affect our ligaments. Progesterone makes them soft and stretchy, absolutely not what you want when you are hypermobile.
You may find hrt helps your hormones balance and things get more manageable. You definitely need your muscles to be strong, especially glutes. I have to stretch my glutes every day too and as soon as I get a flare up I make sure to do more glute and quad stretches, but not hamstrings for me, that doesn't help. It really is trial and error but a good specialist physio should be able to help you.

Thanks so much for replying to me. That is so fascinating about hormones. Mine has come on in the last year and a half and I keep being dismissed. I’m going private too :( I’m also 39 and so only saw a private specialist last week about going into hrt (I have other hormone related symptoms) and I feel like all of this has got to be hormonally linked. Gives me hope that I’m not going completely mad if you’ve noticed it too! It’s so debilitating/painful at times. Sitting on the floor with my children to play (they’re 5 and 3) is a bit of a nightmare as it flares the pain. Do you get any leg tingling as well or just the pain from hard surfaces? Really appreciate your response earlier - as I said, never come across someone with the same issue!

I've never had any leg tingling but hard surfaces, yes, and be careful turning over in bed and getting in and out of cars. Always keep your knees together doing those things. If it's an option for you, a low dose contraceptive pill might be better than hrt given your age. I take millinette 20/75. It keeps the worst at bay and then I make sure I rest during a flare up and not try to push through it.

The tingling I think is part of my peri symptoms anyway (I've had scans to rule out MS so they think hormonal). Sorry to hear you still suffer. I think this is going to be me too! At least you have a manageable solution 🙂

@DelilahBucketJust wanted to update after you’d been so helpful and for anyone else that finds this post! I have had my mri results and all they can see is inflammation of the pubic symphis - so osteitis pubis. I started physio last week and she has told me I’m hypermobile - I didn’t know this about myself! So sounds like I’m very similar to you! Still in a lot of pain but hoping the physio is going to sort me out 🤞🏻

going to have this coil out as I don’t think that’s helping! Out of interest have you always known you’ve been hypermobile? I don’t know if I need to go and see my gp about it at all?

@Katie342 it was suggested when I was a child but my mum dismissed the idea it wasn't a "thing" in those days. I had problems during pregnancy with ligaments, but not picked up on then by a physio. It was only through a private doctor I was diagnosed, when I was completely unable to walk and all other health professionals were scratching their heads. That was about 13 years ago. When I knew what it was I started researching and learned about the hormone connection. Suddenly it all made sense.
