Private Scans/Tests or NHS? - Blood in Urine

DH had seen his urine really brown the weekend before last. He called 111 (they only called back after 24 hrs while promising 4hrs) and went through walk-in centre and then a GP appointment. Only on last Friday, it's confirmed there's blood in urine but no infection. Today there are more results coming out confirming high red cells and abnormal levels of epithelial cells.

I'm now worried to sick. All the slow moving and disjointed NHS services don't give me confidence in getting a clear picture for another week or so.

Time can be critical if you know what. He doesn't have private healthcare plan. So we will have to pay out of own pocket if not through NHS.

I've looked online, Scans in private sector probably will cost £200-£400 for bladder, prostate and kidney? But I don't know if just scans are sufficient to diagnose or eliminate.

Any suggestions please?

It is probably not worth a private scan. He needs a blood test and a GP appointment which could possibly be on the phone to gather information and refer him . It depends on his age, other medical history and medication as to whether he fits the criteria for a 2 week wait appointment or whether his GP will organise a scan first. He could pay to see a urologist which might save a couple of weeks but investigations are likely to be very expensive . I would go via GP first muddying the waters often adds to delays. ( pun not intended) .

First step is ct scan kidneys and bladder. My first guess might be a kidney stone...

Oh! And I believe in the NHS

I’d say NHS as private diagnosis and then on to NHS is even more disjointed (as you’d expect), just going through this for on-going treatment and it’s slow and painful.

Has the GP seen the results yet or were they only available on the NHS app without commentary? If GP has seen them I’d make an appointment- if GP has not seen them I’d wat for that and they should contact you if anything looks wrong.

He's seen the GP today and got referred to urology. Blood test for PSA.

I'm feeling sick just by typing these... She said it's unlikely to be kidney stone as there's no pain..

Worried to sick. Appointment for hospital is booked for the week after next. They will call him for CT and something else.

He's been a bit coughing for over a month, making me wonder if it's related.

Still no pain! But weaker than usual...

@Ohlife2020 I don’t have any advice but didn’t want to leave without saying that I hope you get clarity soon and that the time until the CT scan is passing soon.

What to do now?

He's seen the consultant today with ultrasound and cystoscope. They couldn't find the cause. There's only a small stone in the kidney which is unlikely to be the cause. PSA screening came back normal too.

He says there's still blood in urine. He's also not been himself for the entire month!

They are going to arrange CT, but in a few weeks time!

I wanted to cry the entire afternoon. What could it be? I'm so worried and hate this feeling of unknown. Can't find anyone in RL to unload. Don't even know if I shall ask him how he feels..
