Hi newish to asthma was only diagnosed last year and had attacks on and off since then , last few attacks have lasted on and off for days the latest one is still ongoing since Tuesday night , I will be fine for hours then wheezing and struggling to breath again , inhaler takes edge off but not for long.
Is this normal to last so long ? I'm going to contact Dr in morning but worrying that it might not be asthma , I have some other issues just now mainly bleeding gums , dentist has recommended blood tests via Dr as teeth and gums are healthy .

It debilitating I'm luckily on maternity leave but honestly don't know how I would work like this , it's hard to get anything done . And my chest is so tender from all the wheezing .
Should ad I have been on steroid inhaler daily for over a year too .

Which inhalers do you have?

ShortWide · 02/03/2025 22:48

You're definitely doing the right thing by getting seen, you could need to step up your steroid inhaler, try a different inhaler altogether or even have a course of antibiotics +/- steroid tablets.

I know bleeding gums can be common in pregnancy due to hormone changes. My dentist mentioned this a few times.

Get your iron levels checked. Mine were low and what I thought was asthma was breathlessness caused by low iron.

justasking111 · 02/03/2025 23:35

Please see your GP

Justmeeeindie · 02/03/2025 23:48

Thanks for the replies , I have previously had treatment for b12 deficiency (had blood transfusion then injection for a year before new go said I didn't need them anymore ) so thinking bleeding gums is linked too that . Interestingly symptom can be breathlessness too so definitely something I will chase up .

I currently have brown and blue inhaler sorry I'm useless with remembering the names.

I will be calling gp hopefully can get it better under control .

I agree with pp maybe anaemia especially after having baby. Are you breastfeeding?

Pregnancy also affects thyroid?

Have you had a cold?.so congested? Or perhaps a (new) allergy.
If the blue doesnt relieve it then its a&e....

Coffee can also open up airways.

This doesn't sound like good asthma control at all. Not a doctor but my understanding is you'll need more and/or a different steroid inhaler (brown) and feel free to take plenty of the blue one to resolve (I think they said up to 10? But even that was for my dd so an adult could presumably take more) . Do get seen.

justasking111 · 03/03/2025 00:05

My husband was given a course of steroids on top of his inhalers when he was like this. But anaemia is a good call too. Just go see the GP.

OP if you needed b12 injections my understanding is you need them for life. Any once you start having them, they shouldn't retest as the test will not be accurate.
Were you having them for pernicious anaemia? I think this is a lifelong condition.

I was told in hospital that it was pernicious anemia , I had injections for year then moved gp new GP said I didn't require them anymore no test where done at all .
I'm hoping it is just b12 atleast I know what to expect .
My dad has been on b12 injections as long as I can remember so it's most likely answer for alot of my issue but hopefully get blood test results back on Monday .

Asthma has calmed down alot still bit coughy but barely needed inhaler last few days , will see GP on Monday about that and blood test results .

Sounds like the pernicious anemia needs proper management which may be part of it

I switched to Fostair / mart system after my second child, also late diagnosed. Made a huge difference.

I do now use x2 morning and night in the winter which is when most of my triggers occur which isn't technically mart but helps a lot

Get an asthma review and see if you can switch your something else. Made a huge difference to me

You need an asthma review. Brown and blue inhalers are fine but there are newer, better meds and regimens for adults.

Also you need your bloods doing.
