TAVI heart procedure - QE B’ham or UHCW hospital? ❤️

Evening all,

I appreciate this is a very niche question but I would be grateful for any tips about the TAVI heart procedure, in particular any experiences at either the QE Birmingham or UHCW Coventry? Would one of these hospitals be batter than the other for such a procedure? Thank you ☺️

Hi
I'm guessing it's in the aortic valve - usually for aortic stenosis. Has the recipient been getting symptoms such as shortness of breath or dizziness on exertion? The TAVI valve should improve these symptoms. It's a safe procedure and the recovery is so much better than with surgery. Good luck Flowers

I don't live in the UK, but my DF had this procedure here a few years ago. It's a fairly common and straightforward procedure and the recovery is pretty easy (and it was a life changer for him).

Hi, yes that’s right. The procedure is definitely happening but we just wondered if there was any reason to go for it at one hospital over another?

The mortality rate for the procedure seems relatively high, I wondered if this might be mitigated by surgeon expertise etc?

Hopeful bump - appreciate this thread has a limited audience! 😊

Family member is now stating they are considering refusing the surgery due to an apparent 5% mortality rate and 20% complication rate. Obviously I will research these statistics as I’m not sure they’re right, but does anyone have any advice please? I tried to explain how bad the mortality rate is of doing nothing but I don’t know if it worked. I wouldn’t want to do something with a risk rate of 1 in 20 of not surviving but surely that’s better than the alternative? Sad
