Breast lump

I found a lump, in my right breast. It isn't painful. It's the size of a small baked bean I suppose. I had a mammogram last week and I have a breast clinic appointment for Tuesday.

Not googling on purpose. Feeling waves of anxiety when I think about it.

Have not told DH - he is the most morbid of health worriers and I don't want to have to manage his anxiety (and imagination) as well as my own.

I haven't told my family or friends. The only person who knows is my HR manager as I needed the time off for the mammogram. They were surprisingly supportive.

Not really sure why I'm posting. I don't know what to expect next week.

Hi there. What would usually happen is - possibly another mammogram, almost certainly an ultrasound, and then depending what that shows, maybe a needle aspiration (for a fluid filled lump), a biopsy (for a solid lump) or no further action. In my experience, the person doing the ultrasound will have a pretty good idea of what it is, and will often manage expectations accordingly. They usually suggest you take someone with you on the basis that if they think it looks suspicious, they will tell you there and then. Hope that is helpful and wishing you the best.

Thank you.
I'm meant to be going back to work in the afternoon.

How will they know what type of biopsy is needed? Will they do it on the day?

The ultrasound will tell them if the lump is solid or fluid. And they will then decide what to do, if anything. If it’s a one stop clinic which they usually are, they will do it there and then.

Sorry you're going through this, you sound very calm and are possibly in shock.

My lump was malignant but I got treated very quickly, that was 2 years ago and I'm still here to tell me tale xx

Hi, I found a lump, similar to what you're describing but I'd say slightly bigger a few months ago. I was so worried as the GP noted it as being hard so my mind did go all over the place. Went to the hospital & had an ultrasound which showed normal lumpy breast tissue. The consultant said sometimes surrounding tissue can contribute to feeling some sort of lump, of course always best to get it checked out. Hope you get good news.

Found a lump before Christmas. Well I wasn't going to ruin Christmas. Then husbands birthday. I went to GP who agreed to put me on the fast track. Two weeks it took. Told husband the day before I needed him to take me.

On the day I saw the consultant who examined me, was sent for a mammogram, then an ultrasound. They then took two biopsies. A week later, last Wednesday I saw the consultant again. Diagnosis which he had suspected was a fat necrosis. Which can be caused by an injury to the breast. Seat belt, children, fall, hard contact with something. They can take 12-18 months to show up as a small hard lump

Try not to worry. This was my third time on this merry go round.

Thanks everyone.
Bracing myself for the appointment.

Yes, maybe I'm in shock, maybe I'm very good at shelving my feelings for the sake of the family (haven't we all had years of practice).

I've lost half a stone in 10 days - stress I guess. I have no appetite at all.

I had my appointment a week last Friday now. The needle biopsy was painful. They were lovely, but didn't really reassure me.

When will they contact me? It's been the longest week

It is so hard this part. The worst two week wait.

I was given a return appointment at the biopsy appointment but I think they knew it was cancer or may be a different system here. It's usually about 2-3 weeks later here

Ikeameatballlunch · 11/03/2025 08:01

I also lost weight, please do force yourself to eat good protein and carbs. It will help

Did they give you a follow up appointment- that is what has happened for all the biopsies I have had? Usually 2 weeks after the biopsy.

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 11/03/2025 08:13

The wait is tricky. I hope they soon get back to you - could you give them a call to ask on timescale? FWIW when I had a mammogram recall the ultrasound specialist who did my biopsy was able to say at the appointment that things looked sinister.

It’s very usual for things to be ok, the wait is horrible though.

justasking111 · 11/03/2025 08:17

I got a letter to attend following the biopsy. Consultant said good news it was a fat necrosis probably from an injury some time ago.

Ikeameatballlunch · 11/03/2025 08:36

Perhaps give them a ring incase a letter has gone amiss?
