I started a thread but nobody replied so im doing another one.

I have an infected tooth. Im on antibiotics and need root canal. The problem is im on a waiting list to get it done because my dentist cant do it and it needs an endodontist. It has infected twice and ive been told the wait for an endodontist is a few months on the NHS. If i go private it will be 140k but it will be done next week

What should i do

140k??!

FeathersMcFeather · 26/02/2025 20:48

Do you perhaps mean £1400?

PerkyOchrePeer · 26/02/2025 21:08

Just googled. Expect to pay anywhere from £300 to £750 for a private root canal treatment. . The dentist i rang said it is £100 for a check up so thats 850 when adding the highest cost. I think i was not thinking straight when i rang the private dentist. I will speak to my own dentist about this and see what he says

All in all i am lookibg at £1,500 which includes the crown. It would be better to have the tooth removed

Private endodontist here cost £1200 plus consultation fee of £120 , even then was a few weeks wait . Don’t forget if it’s successful you need the crown done later which can be a similar amount if you go privately to a specialist .

KimP85 · 26/02/2025 21:30

I was lucky I had the same about 18 months ago but my dentist sent me on the way with my antibiotics, then booked me in for the week after my course had ended for the first part of my root canal. Which tooth is it? Would it bother you if you had it pulled? Mine was the third from the back top left not including my wisdom tooth as that's been pulled out too.

KimP85 · 26/02/2025 21:41

Also I didn't have a crown just had it filled.

PerkyOchrePeer · 26/02/2025 22:01

I I do not want the tooth taken out. It is the lower part of my mouth next to the wisdom tooth and because of where it is my dentist says it's too tricky to do and it needs and endodontist which he is not. I called Nhs 111 and the dental nurse called me back and said sometimes and tobiotics take at least two days to start working and Teeth sometimes get worse before they get better

I am quite upset when I saw the dentist today he didn't give me an X-ray he said I don't need to see you next year I can see it's infected but surely the x-ray would give detailed overview of the situation my two take is getting worse and I can't cope with this anymore

shellyleppard · 26/02/2025 23:17

Op ask for an x ray and antibiotics. Also try salt water rinse, tastes nasty but it does help

justasking111 · 26/02/2025 23:21

At that cost I'd go for an implant.

hermionegrunge · 26/02/2025 23:23

Sympathies. Dental issues are horrible and antibiotics seem to take a long time to start working. I had a very bad infection in a rotting wisdom tooth and it was day 6 of antibiotics before the mind numbing pain started to subside a bit. My advice would be get it removed. Antibiotics will help for now, root canal will help for longer but it will probably be something that will come back in time. I can't stand toothache, it's the worst of pain. So I'd rather have it removed altogether than mess about with costly procedures when the end result will probably be the same anyway.

I was given antibiotics today but my tooth is so painful I don't think they're starting to work painkillers don't help either and so I'm going to phone the dentist again tomorrow I can't deal with this anymore

Root canal removed the nerve so I will never have any pain in this tooth ever again and before we talk about removing the tooth I need the opinion of a professional dentist because if they say to me root canal will do the job and you won't have any more problems then why remove it I don't want it removed

This video is true because it happened to me. This tooth was infected. I had antibiotics and it got better and now its come back worse because the tooth has not been treated. But what the hell am i meant to do when i am on a waiting list fie the treatment. The man in the video is making it sound like patience are saying oh we don't need treatment because the antibiotics have worked and we're not in pain but if a patient is told that they need root canal why would they query whether to have it or not and that's not what I am doing I desperately want this canal done but it's out of by hands because I'm on this waiting list for about four months a gift by a miracle the antibiotics work this time who knows it might flare up again while I'm waiting and come back even were still and I did tell the dentist that and he didn't really comment

The dentist I see is good but in certain situations his professionalism leave something to be desired like today he should have x-rayed me but what he did say he is prepared to give me some treatments to tide me over until I see the endodontist and I can't seem to get to the bottom of what he intends to do or whether what he will do will mess up what the endodontist need to do and then hero say to me I can't do anything because your dentist has messed this tooth up by doing something to this tooth to tight you over which he shouldn't have done and so the only thing you can have done is to have it removed

My root canal lasted under five years husbands around seven years. I'd have it removed. See how you get on without it. Mine was behind an eye tooth so I had an implant. My husband had two implants.

Dita73 · 27/02/2025 03:00

I’d get the tooth removed then get an implant later. Root canal fillings often result in losing the tooth eventually anyway so I wouldn’t bother

Theraffarian · 27/02/2025 07:43

If the antibiotics don’t work , your normal dentist can drill into the tooth to reduce the pressure building up before the root canal is done . Also worth noting that although the root canal does remove the nerve , it doesn’t always result in being completely pain free , six weeks i still have discomfort and can’t bite on the tooth , and the root canal has been checked and deemed successful at present .

So if after your root canal is still cannot bite and you are still in pain what are they going to do because I have never experienced anything like that and I have had three root canal treatments with no pain afterwards and all these root canals were done a few years ago

I would never have an implant I could not go through with that plus the fact that I have got bittle-bone disease so I wouldn't be suitable for an implant and I wouldn't be able to afford it at any way and as you know with an implant you have to make sure your bones can take it and mine are two brittle and I have known someone who had three implants done and they didn't last so she had them removed they didn't stay in

I am on day two of the antibiotics and I woke up this morning with a bad headache and throbbing too but I've taken a couple of painkillers and my first antibiotic for the day and all the pain has gone I know I need to finish up the course of antibiotics but this means that things are working.

I have been trying to call my dental surgery just speak to someone to get into see another dentist because I have some further questions and queries about this tooth and as soon as they open I will give them a call. On a separate notes somebody on here said that Rookie knows don't last now I've been told by a medic not to believe everything I read or compare yourself to others because each person is an individual and each person reacts to things differently so if someone on here says my root canal only lasted six years that doesn't mean to say I have to sit here and read that and worry that mind will only last six years everyone is different

I had taken out there after around 20 years of patching it and it was a complete relief.
Never had any issues since
I was Private too so my dentist could ahve tried to charge for a root canal etc but he just said he would rather take it out

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/02/2025 11:08

I have just booked an appointment at my dental surgery for Monday to see a different dentist to get a second opinion and to query why they cannot chase up my referral because they said we haven't got their phone number
