Any Dentists Around? Roots Left After Extraction

Went to have the extraction of a molar in lower jaw yesterday.

It was a tooth that had been bothersome for some time. My dentist started root canal work on it a few weeks ago but it was still giving me pain after the first appointment. He then went back in and found another canal, packed it etc and I was due to have the root canal finished next week. Even after this 2nd appt though I still had long term pain, so he thought the best thing was to remove it as the likelihood of the root canal working was slim.

I went yesterday for the extraction and I have to say I was a bit shocked by the process! (And I have a history of a lot of dental work in my teens so I am not easily bothered by it!) I was in there for a good 20 - 30 mins with him trying to extract the tooth. It broke off. He tried drilling it twice and SO much pressure and manipulation (the tooth didn't hurt but the pain in my jaw from pressure was awful). In the end he said he thought it was best to leave it as if he tried to get the rest of the roots out he would need to take too much of my jaw bone away if I wanted an implant later on. He said the roots weren't budging and probably fused to the jaw.

His plan is to leave the roots until they work themselves up near the surface and then take them out - in perhaps a year or so's time. Does anyone know if that sounds like the best course of action please? Since returning I have read that leaving roots in can be problematic - an infection and pain risk?? He has given me a strong 5 day course of antibiotics and I'm doing all the right things with salt mouthwash etc - but I'm really not sure on the best way forward from here? It's not what I was expecting.

I once had bits of root work their way up through the gum following an extraction.
It took a very long time and the wound didn't heal properly until the bits had all come out. I didn't suffer any infection though

Thank you! This is what I'm worried about I suppose... it's like a long term half finished job and I just don't want any more issues with it!!

My tooth was extracted the other week

It broke in half horizontally so it took a while to get the root out. He said it came out in 3 pieces which I presumed was him having to break it down to get to it all

It's healing well

He had to push the other patients time slots forward and I suppose if it had been trickier he might have got me in the next day to finish it off.

The last tooth I had out was a beast. Huge long roots

Hi @PrimalScreaming
I had a impacted wisdom tooth partially removed in 2022. The roots were very close to a nerve so the tooth had to be broken and only partially removed at that time. Then the roots worked their way up and I had the remaining bits of tooth removed in Nov 2024. After the first extraction the wound never fully healed but it didn't cause me any issues or discomfort. Only when the bit of tooth had worked it's way up to the top of my gum did it start to hurt and cause discomfort when I ate. So it was removed. I have had no issues since then and relieved it is out, it is fully healed now.

Hi OP. I have roots from an extraction of a bottom molar about 2 years ago. The dentist tried on two separate occasions, the second time he cut my gum but still couldn’t get it so it was stitched up. He told me it would never heal and referred me to the dental hospital. I never went as the previous two attempts were traumatic.

It did completely heal and the roots are slowly working their way out. It’s never been infected and occasionally the gum is sore as another piece pushes through.

My dentist is happy to leave it if I’m happy so it stays.

Thank you for the positive stories - it's helping!

I think I was just hoping that the extraction would be an end to all the problems and dentist visits with it... but it sounds as though several of you have found it unproblematic, so here's hoping! Thank you!
